The epidemic of technology has ripped through the world with an iron grip and an astronomical pace, inviting users into a world with unimaginable opportunities of use. Unfortunately this technology has come with an expensive price, impacting our identities of which have become modified or invented versions of our physical self. Reviewing what has been learnt, it is obvious that technology is a democratising, empowering tool, which used with moderation and proper use, is the miracle of the modern age. It is the poor use of this technology alongside the overuse that leads to the negative viewing of this technology. In the web revolution, the virtual versions of ourselves have become more important than our physical self’s. Facebook and other social media has become a platform for inventing a new version of ourselves, a version that can be easily modified to popular ideals and images, a version that is not an accurate representation of our true identities. This idea is reinforced in Black Mirror, where real-life possessions are non-existent; everyone wears the same grey clothing and operates on the same general schedule. Dopples, virtual avatars, are peoples only source of identity; items such as vibrant, colourful clothing as well as accessories are purchased in order to become ‘cool’. These virtual avatars constrict human interactions by limiting them to the confines of the web, in a world where emotion, tone and body language is extinct. Human face-to-face interaction suffers due to this reliance on the web to communicate, interactions become awkward and dysfunctional as basic social face-to-face skills have not been developed. Therefore the pace of technology has forced people to invent a new identity, different to their true identity to conform to
