The iron mining industry was struggling in the 1800. How the iron industry started. Minnesota geologist found iron in the mesabi range. Henry Oliver started the Oliver mining company. Henry Oliver bought the mesabi range and made a deal with Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller. The deal was that Oliver mining company would mine and Rockefeller’s railway would take the ore out of the mines and take them to the great lakes and load them on ships which took the ore to Andrew Carnegie’s factories that turned iron ore into steel.
