The basis of American society has been built upon the individual
In the excerpt, “Competition and Happiness”, by Theodore Isaac Rubin, he analyzes the cause of humanity’s crucible with emotional struggles, Rubin believes the sole source is competition, whereas I believe it is human design. Rubin believes competition to be the perpetrator of a life of crime, victimizing and wreaking havoc on our collective psyche. He argues that society and upbringing in a competitive environment is where emotional issues are born. According to Rubin, the world facilitates competition because of our petty and prideful choices. He believes that the way people raise their children has infected our entire society with the competitive epidemic, and to some extent, pandemic.
In other words how a person lives is directly impacted by the models of their society. The philosophies of those important in society compared to those of an individual who may have differing ideas on life may create peace or could lead to hatred. How leaders of societies rule can vary from capitalistic
Social Darwinism- During the 1865-1990s social Darwinism was used significantly to encourage human competition, to oppose intervention in the natural human order. This was the idea that humans compete for the struggle of existence. Charles Darwin, an English naturalist and geologist contributed much of his research to the theory of natural selection. Also known as the survival of the fittest.
Many people feel that American society is too competitive. Does competition lead to better products and results, or does it lead to a focus on winning at all costs? I disagree with this statement, because without it there would be no elections, no war, and no freedom. Being competitive is a big help in many different scenarios, competitiveness is a big role in many different things such as war. Without competitiveness, we would lose many battles.
Will and Ariel once wrote “Nature smiles at the union of freedom and equality in our utopias. For freedom and equality are sworn and everlasting enemies, and when one prevails the other dies.” This quote does a very good job of explaining the yearning for a balance between popular culture and equality America has been yearning for since its inception. Americans generally have always felt that equality is a goal worth striving as all Americans are in the end American regardless of background, but at the same time, we have always been chasing an impossible target in obtaining the most material objects that our popular culture pushes on the public. When it comes down to it, popular culture and equality have been opposed since the constitution.
You will always have a competitive nature. I get compared to my sister all the time, so we are constantly competing. It is hard sometimes, because we may not excel at the same things. However, being competitive helps to push ourselves to be better.
Discrimination over the Years In the world today many people believe that discrimination is normal in our society. Learning about it in school, hearing it on TV, and seeing it on social media outlets helps societies see how discrimination has changed throughout the years. When seeing or hearing things about discrimination people often think about ways to prevent it or prevent being discriminated against. The answer to that is to stand up for the beliefs in a culture or society and fight against people who discriminate.
America is more today than ever before a consumerist society, which saw its start in the 1920s. Present day Americans just like in the 1920s do rely on the production of goods to keep up with their demands and are spending their money on more than just their household necessities. Another thing that has stayed the same from the 1920s to present day is Americans constant need to be entertained. Because of the boom of the 20s more and more people had more money to spend an that spurred the start of people having more freetime and using their money for entertainment. American society especially right now is obsessed with immediate satisfaction which all saw its start in the 1920’s as an entertainment based culture as well.
Weather it be because of their gender, race, social class or even age. Since so many people are experiencing this unfair treatment; it can without a doubt be classified as a flaw in society. Many authors and musicians have written about this topic, reflecting on the problem in hopes to raise awareness and create a change. When society reads or hears about major social issues including discrimination; it makes them reflect on themselves, the people around them and the society at which they live in. Throughout high school, many pieces of literature have highlighted this social concern.
Classism is a major issue that plagues American society. Classism separates groups by their economic status in society. America is perceived to be a middle class society, however in reality the middle class does not hold majority of the nation’s wealth. Most of the nation’s wealth is held by 1% of the population in America which consists of 34% of the nation’s wealth, meanwhile “the richest 20% of Americans hold nearly 85% of the total household wealth in the country” (Adams et al, 2013, p. 151). American citizens that are a part of the upper class are privilege because they have access to majority of the resources.
America has had a tumultuous existence, replete with war, progress, and ideologies. The most formidable of these is individualism, or the shift of society’s focus from the group to the individual and a growing emphasis on their personal needs and desires. Despite wide criticism, it has become the societal norm, spanning all generations, genders, races, and walks of life. Individualism, while indeed centered on the individual, is more accurately described as the changing and shifting relationship between the individual and society.
“Democracy presumes that we’re all created equal; competition proves we are not, or lese every race would end in a tie.” By Nancy’s definition of democracy everyone is created equal, as stated, which makes competing to see who’s the best obsolete. Then why when competing do we try to make it seem that everyone is equal? Should someone like Oscar, whose prosthetic
Society is constantly changing, and some people think it’s for the better, some think it’s for the worse. I feel that there is no question that society is changing for the worse. A Pew Research Poll taken in the spring of 2015 says that only 45% of people around the world express the view that today’s children will be better off financially than their parents.
There are many things that are wrong with the American society today. There are stupid things like doing various challenges, to making up some type of movement that doesn’t even make sense. Those are things that makes today’s society look bad. Some things that have been going on for a while now are racism and the sense of entitlement of Americans. Sense of entitlement and racism are things that are impacting this country in a negative way.
