Confirmation bias is becoming more and more relevant as technology advances. Sometimes it can be bad depending on what information is being obtained. Specifically, focusing on social media, confirmation bias is present when people look for information that aligns with their existing beliefs. This leads to tunnel vision and hearing, meaning all other thoughts and ideas are ignored. It’s important that people are aware of this bias so that they can seek out new information and have a more balanced understanding of society as a whole. This piece of evidence specifically talks about ignoring the other side, it’s not about not knowing what the other side is saying, it’s about knowing it, and still ignoring it. Confirmation bias can create many challenges for people, but the main issue is that it disrupts people’s ability to have an open mind. While there may be many issues that arise from the concept of confirmation bias, there are also some positives that come out of it. One positive in particular is mentioned in Kendra Cherry’s publication of “What is The Confirmation Bias”, when she includes “On the positive side, it can help us stay confident in our beliefs and values and give us a sense of certainty and security.” Going off this piece from Cherry, it is definitely true that sticking to your beliefs is important, however, confirmation bias means you are not even considering the other side. The Decision Lab in their article, “Why Do We Favor Our Existing Beliefs?” mentions that “Confirmation bias can lead to poor decision-making as it distorts the reality from which we draw evidence.” So confirmation bias can help reassure people in their decisions, but those decisions may not always be the best ones. Like the piece from the article includes, it “distorts” the evidence that one chooses from, but not only that, it limits it as well. With this distorted evidence, that person is going to be heavily influenced by what information they are receiving, which is one way confirmation bias is a bad thing. Additionally, a danger of confirmation bias is present when it creates stereotypes of different groups. Dayva Segal from WebMD examines in her article, “What is Confirmation Bias”, that “This type of bias is part of what maintains stereotypes.
