Are social media and individuality good for our American democracy? People these days seem to have rather different opinions than back in the day. For instance, gender equality or drug legalization (marijuana specifically). I think that these can both (social media and individuality) negatively and positively impact American democracy. There are people who both say that the media is good for democracy, and that it is bad for democracy. Some may say it encourages the young people to think for themselves with ideas being thrown around. Others take the opposing side, saying it’s hard to have opinions with so much gossip and rumors everywhere about politics. I think both sides have a point. But which one is stronger? It is used by middle aged and old people too. Just not as much. Some of us grow up in households where we have one political opinion as a family. Some grow up in homes where everyone chooses what they think for themselves. When it comes to social media, this environment can really matter. Take the first setting. You grow up in a home where your parents are both strictly liberal. You will tend to, as you mature and begin to think, take on these opinions most likely. So, when or if you partake in social media, your firm opinions will probably stand with reinforcement that has occurred all your life. But, what if you grow up in a family where everyone either didn’t really have opinions or chose not to share them so it was everyone choose their own?
