Joe Nocera’s “Is Donald Trump Serious?” appeared in the online New York Times on 29 September 2015. In the article, Nocera writes that Donald Trump should not be taken seriously by providing detailed examples of the outrageous proposals he plans to achieve if he becomes the President of the United States. Nocera implies that if Trump became the president, he would destroy this country by putting America in further debt, instigating riots, and causing wars between countries. Overall, the piece is effective at making Trump look like a poor presidential candidate. Though Nocera’s article does its job effectively, it is not without flaw. Nocera succeeds at this by restating parts of one of Trump’s speeches. In this particular speech, Trump spoke of getting America more jobs and reducing the American people’s taxes. Trump plans on achieving this by encouraging American companies to stay in America by placing a tax on the profits companies make overseas. He believes that if he does this it would persuade companies to stay in America and would result in more jobs for the American people. To reduce the taxes, he plans to cut corporate taxes and the top income tax rate substantially. Trump also plans to allow millions of Americans “to go untaxed …show more content…

Nocera writes, “During the 60 Minutes interview, Trump told [Scott] Pelley that he would force the Chinese to ‘do something’ about North Korea’s nuclear program — while also preventing them from devaluing their currency!” Nocera uses this information in his article to show that Trump does not think before he acts, which would result in him creating more problems for the country than he would solve. If Trump were to go through with this plan China would become our enemy. This would cause the trade between us to be cut off resulting in decreases in the economy, which would lead to another recession or even a depression. This would also bring into question as to what other countries will Trump force to do things. This stupidity would result in America having more enemies since our leader would force people to do things against their will, which would cause America to be viewed as a dictatorship. America already has enough enemies as of now and does not need anymore. Nocera points this out to his readers by providing examples of Trump’s idea of “protecting America,” which leads the reader to start to ponder over the information. This allows his audience to form questions, Nocera is causing them to get rid of their ignorance, asking about Trump as an overall leader and how he will affect the country. Nocera presents this information
