Mrs. Patch-Withers noticed and Finny quickly came up with a convincing story to possibly get himself out of trouble. Gene thinks Finny will be busted and reacts by saying, “I could feel myself becoming unexpectedly excited at that” (Knowles 12). This quote shows the beginning of the envy Gene feels toward Finny. Jonathan Edwards, the preacher from the sermon Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God, preaches to his fellow devotees to God, to "inspire" people to participate in the worshiping of God. In reality, Edward's ineffectiveness in using dysphemisms, hyperbole, and negative appeals in his speech, makes his message deeply unbelievable. Edwards harsh diction toward opposing opinions makes one view him as attacking other aspects of a different beliefs. In the fifth paragraph Edwards said, "Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead…" This sentence gives a feeling to be a little taken back by his tone. He disgustedly said "your wickedness" like you ,as in non-believers in God, are doing the absolute worst thing in the world.
In the the short story holmes was thoughtful of what he did and said. He was also well aware of what was going around him. An example of this was when he went to Watson house he saw that Watson’s maid was really lazy and careless because of the mud that was left on Watson boots.
