Is football too dangerous for the players?
As Super Bowl Fifty begins, the MVPs of the previous super bowls are welcomed by millions of people. When MVPs walked towards their place I noticed over half of them had a limp or looked as if they were in major pain. This got me wondering if football is too dangerous for the players. Football is one of the most watched and played sports in the United States. The fans love the most popular features of sports, but those factors of the sport are what ends up killing many professional football players. A football player experiences massive hits to the helmet in a game. Those hits slam the brain on the side of the skull, which creates a concussion or a bruise on the brain. Continuous concussions create massive head trauma which chokes the brain. This choking of the brain lowers the life expectancy of a football player to fifty-three to fifty-nine years old. Unfortunately many players and families ignore the facts and allow their children and themselves to slowly injure the most important part of the human body. Many high school and college football players have realized what is happening to their bodies and have made a simple switch to other sports like soccer, baseball and lacrosse. Those sports have physical contact, but in a sport such as lacrosse, if any contact is made to the helmet, a penalty is given to the player responsible for the hit. Companies like Schutt, Nike, STX, Cascade, and Warrior try every year to come up with equipment that is legal for the sport and will give the players one-hundred percent protection which teams and players will buy. Sadly, no piece of equipment is perfect. Players will still suffer more and more injuries and if what studies show is true, they will eventually die. Football and the NFL are so large and popular that it has been hard to tell this to the people who should know what is happening to themselves and those who they know. Still, many refuse to listen to the facts and think the new helmets and pads will protect them and that is what covers up what doctors try to explain to the people. “ Concussion ”, the new movie starring Will Smith; shows the studies of the doctor who found what was killing professional football players. Because the sport was so popular, he could never bring his facts to the
