Football is one of America’s favorite athletic games played and watched by thousands of people. Today, professional athletes, adults, teenagers, and even young children have worked together on many levels while playing competitively in this, hands on, contact sport. However, one major concern about this sport is its equipment and its overall safety. For head protection to be the most effective against the speed and weights of players on the football field the researchers said it has to block impulse.The new helmet has to have the design approved based solely on the peak force that the helmet can withstand. The design has to be built with mock cross-sections of materials that stood in for the brain and skull in various helmet designs. The helmet consists of three materials that amount to more than the sum of their parts.The first layer is similar to hard polycarbonate. The second layer is a flexible plastic. The third layer is a visco-elastic layer. The U-M researchers received $250,000 to take their technology to the prototype stage.
