The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel that is based on the society of the 1920s. The main character of the novel is Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and enigmatic man who throws parties in the hopes of winning back his lost love with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby's character is a mix of both happy and sad. Gatsby is a man who has achieved his wealth through illegal work. He grew up in poverty in North Dakota. Gatsby reinvented himself by changing his name, creating a new image of himself. He is a man who has worked so much to achieve his goals, and is now living the life he always dreamed of. On one hand, Gatsby achieves the American Dream and the pursuit of success and wealth by hard work. On the other hand, Gatsby isn't the happiest person he wants to win back his lost love with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby also is also the most perfect person he is a perpetrator. He is involved in illegal activities such as bootlegging, and his obsession with Daisy makes him manipulate others. Gatsby's character is very mysterious. He is a character who is present and absent in his own story. "He's just a man named Gatsby." (Chapter 4) - This quote shows that Gatsby is not a hero, but rather a human being with many problems. Another quote that shows that he just sticks by himself is "I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life." (Chapter 1) - This quote suggests that Gatsby is a person who is unable to fully engage with the world around him. He always throws some pretty huge parties with many people but he never really talks or hangs out with them. In general he is a very lonely man. "The loneliest moment in someone's life is when they are watching their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly."
