A Hero or a Legend? The NBA was formed in 1946 and only held 11 teams. Today the NBA has 30 teams, one being the Los Angles Lakers which held former player Kobe Bryant. Kobe was an inspirational player and was known for his accomplishments on and off the court. He would show respect to his teammates, but also devoted time to his family and helping people off the court. He is considered to be a legend and some even call him a hero. Some say Kobe Bryant should be regarded as a hero for his work in the NBA and the accomplishments he's completed, but although he was a great player he isn’t a hero because he didn’t risk his life or save anyone.

Many considered Kobe to be their hero and we can see this as a fan speaks out about his death. “You were my hero” (Fuller). Many call Kobe their “hero” because they admire his work and words and respect him greatly. This is a true statement as he is a very admirable player, but does that mean he is a hero? With the word hero being used so casually it seems to lose its real meaning of having the courage and standing out which in this case is not used in that sense. Kobe is supported as a hero in the article by Justin Spears which supports this reference with the quote, “‘But Kobe means a lot for everybody, his basketball skills, the way he competes’” (Spears). This shows that Kobe is indeed a hero for his accomplishments and work done before and after retirement from the NBA. This is considered heroic because everyone that he inspired and motivated has personal moments where they claim are moved by his work. This is not valid because just because he was a successful person and athlete doesn’t make him a hero. The definition of a hero explains saving someone or risking your life and Kobe did not display this, so although he was inspirational does not make him a hero like some claim. Evidence to support this can be found in the article which states the importance of the meaning, he was one of my most admirable and most looked up to players (Spears). This shows how important it is because when misused can be misinterpreted and also lead people to titles they aren't always worthy of. The article dives into how heroism is and none of the people claiming Kobe to be a hero can back up their referencing of it with the actual meaning. Without proof, Kobe cannot be called a hero just for his accomplishments without displaying the characteristics of a true
