Piggy should be blamed for the chaos and destruction on the island How would you feel if you were stranded on a deserted island with no one except cruel little children? The Lord of the Flies is an allegorical, dystopian novel written by William Golding in 1954 that symbolizes the good and evil that lives within everyone. The main characters are Jack, Ralph, Samneric, Piggy, Simon, and Roger. The boys find themselves stranded on an uninhabited island isolated from the nuclear war that is breaking out on the mainland. They have to establish order and work together if they want any chance of making it out alive. Some people make this task harder than it needs to be. Due to this, Piggy should be blamed for the chaos and eventual destruction of the island because he is condescending and lazy. To begin, readers often consider Piggy as the voice of reason and intellect in the Lord of the Flies, but he comes across as condescending instead. Whether it be because of how he acts or what he does, he escalates situations and should be blamed for the chaos and the inevitable destruction of the island. For example, Piggy confronted Jack’s tribe and said, “Which is better–to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is?” (Golding 180) This event enraged the savages because Piggy came over to their territory just to belittle and antagonize them, which led to chaos. He does this without even considering that Jack may have forced the hunters to be how they are and how if they don’t comply, there will be consequences. So no matter the outcome they lose either way. Piggy also compares them to Ralph, who is someone that he obviously idolizes (which the hunters do not). He constantly …show more content…

He thinks that everyone should listen to what he has to say just because he is smart, even though he doesn’t help out when others do. For example, Piggy glorifies the conch and thinks that just because he is holding it, everyone should listen. This is proven true when he says, “I got the conch, you let me speak!” (Golding 42) This interaction with the bigguns is foreshadowing chaos in the future because he centers everything he does around the conch, while not prioritizing the things that matter. This shows that Piggy thinks that everyone should stop what they are doing, and do whatever Piggy says just because he is holding a white shell. It also shows that Piggy is narcissistic because he can’t fathom why other people might not want to listen to him since he possesses the ‘owe mighty conch’. Another example of Piggy being lazy is when he didn’t help with the fire so Jack said, “A fat lot you tried. You just sat,” This interaction between Jack and Piggy creates chaos in the future because it sets in stone that Piggy is lazy and relies on other people to get things done. (showing that he is dependent on other people) This also leads to chaos because it creates conflict between the two and hurts the character development between the two. To conclude, Piggy’s laziness is a restraint for the development and progress of things that need to be done. Due to this poor character
