In his article “Opinion: Proposed police reforms come from all corners, cover broad range”, Ken Armstrong ulitizes rhetoric techniques of ethos and pathos to convey in the necessity of heighted police reform across its regulations, among America. Proposals, express the necessity for inevitable change among the regulation of the national police department, “have come from scholars...and the police themselves”, those who have experienced the flaws that derive from the lack of organization among the police force in America, as they live their daily lives (Armstrong, 2016, paragraph 3). This sense of credibility that Armstrong conveys that fueled his ideas of police reform among American society, emphasizes his use of ethos to portray the importance
The police force we all know has one main focus, to protect people and the property in which they stand. Patrolling the areas in which they are assigned to, they make sure civilians follow the law and they handle any breakage of the law as well. Our police force is supposed to make us feel safe wherever we are. They have undoubtedly done a great job in doing so. However, over the past couple of years, the police force has taken a toll for the worse.
“...Much of the recent crime increase threatens the vitality of America’s cities–and thousands of lives–it is not, in itself, the greatest danger in today’s war on cops. The greatest danger lies, rather, in the delegitimation of law and order itself’ (Mac Donald). In the book “The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe,” published in the year of 2016, author Heather Mac Donald provides credible evidence to expand on her viewpoint of our country’s current criminal crisis. In addition to “The War on Cops, Mac Donald has written two other books. Her works “Are Cops Racist?”
“Circumspect Police Ends the Drop in Crime?” This debate topic speaks about police being less proactive, because of vitriol, and causing an increase in crime rates. This debate topic is not directly related to the book, Ghettoside, but falls into the same bracket. The debate talks about the police becoming less involved because of denunciation, and rates of crimes increasing because of that. Ghettoside talks about the black-on-black homicide rates going up, one reason, because of the ignorance of the police.
Bill C-10 was introduced by the Minister of Justice on the 20th of September 2011. Bill C-10 is also called the Safe Streets and Communities Act but many believe the title is very misleading. The purpose of this Act is to provide Justice for Victims of Terrorism, Amend the State Immunity Act, the Criminal Code, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Other Acts. This essay will analyze issues that affect the criminal code and provide the strengths and weaknesses of the Bill, and will also provide justification on why or why not the Bill is favouring for Canada to deal with crime and the judicial process.
Before the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, our country had gone through the policing eras of “the political, reform, and community with the four different policing models of traditional, community policing, problem-oriented and zero-tolerance” (Oliver, 2006, p. 49). The attack caused major changes in policing for several reasons. The main reason was a fear by the citizens of another major attack. In 2004 several polls were conducted to measure the fear factor of general
In places where the defunding of the police has already been made the law the disastrous effects of this have been shown to affect the public Many states such as New York have already moved forward in defunding the police. In New York, the police budget was cut by nearly $1 billion. However, this proved to be disastrous. In July 2020, the NYPD found that there was a 177 percent increase in shooting incidents in all five Boroughs of New York, and a 59 percent increase in murders, another 31 percent more robberies, and finally another 53 percent auto theft statewide.” The defunding

Windsor Police are quick to report to Moore that the only shooting they can recall occuring in Windsor was carried out by a man from Detroit, with several citizens confirming they cannot recall any Canadian perpetrators within the last few years. Moore then goes on to New York city and interviews locals about their thoughts on Canadians and gun violence- many reported factually incorrect statements such as ‘Canadian’s dont watch as many violent movies’, suggesting that these are the reasons the rate of gun violence is lower in Canada. Moore cuts back to Canada, showing us several young boys waiting for a horror movie showing. These statements from American citizens prove that while gun violence rates are lower in Canada, American’s are reluctant to admit that it’s because of stricter gun laws, instead making excuses for themselves such as saying the poverty rate is higher in the United States- again, inherently incorrect as unemployment rates in Canada were up 1.76% in comparison to America as of 2002. ‘Bowling for Columbine’ suggests that the lower rate of gun violence is due to their left-wing government that allows for better health care, school systems and elderly care.
Police corruption is a hot topic displayed everyday through media and everyday life. Conversely, police is not as corrupt as what is presented through media today. But definitely there are always rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards in police that ruin it for everyone else. Canadian policing mostly seems to have rotten apples rather than the barrels or orchards idea. This topic of police corruption became a hot topic specify in the U.S due to the LAPD Rampart scandal, as all three of these ideas of the rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards were present.
Austin Barnes Mrs. Simon English 12 14 March 2023 Defunding The Police is a Bad Idea Defunding the police has been a raging outcry ever since the death of George Floyd occurred in 2020. Naturally as people panic they don’t know how to deal with incidents properly and handle emotions and their first thought is to defund the police completely as a whole. As I do understand the frustration of the people over bad and unprofessional police work resulting in a death, I believe defunding the police is an impulsive response and a rather spur of the moment idea. People that support defunding of law enforcement don’t realize the consequences of this action. Just 3 reasons why this is a bad idea are, less training to deal with incidents which result in
Canada is talked amongst other countries throughout the world as a safe, secure place to live. Majority of people do not know the heinous crimes that take place in Canada daily, especially whilst using a gun. Canada does not come close to the United States when comparing mass shootings, death by a gun, or homicides using a gun; although, the gun crimes in Canada are not improving. While Canada has more stringent gun laws than the united states, gun control in Canada should still be improved for citizen’s safety. Canada is often praised for having more efficient gun laws than the United States, but most people do not know that Canadian laws too, have much room for improvement.
Statistics show that crime rates in the region of Toronto have fallen to the lowest as released by Statistics Canada. But looking at the numbers for the policing budget is astonishing. Although the crime rates have declined drastically the budgets for the Canadian police is still on the rise. The total budget allotted to just the police departments in Canada is $13.6 billion. As we observe the charts below we can clearly see that as the crime rates rose, the number of police officers also rose from the 1960’s till the 1980’s where we see a stagnant slope on the graph.
People hear of police killing innocent black men and blame them for being racist. However, after further research, I argue that their claims are not true. When it comes to police shootings, blacks aren’t the only targets. Far many more white people are killed by police which shows that this is definitely not a racial problem. Based on data collected by the FBI, crime rates have gone down but the number of police shootings have increased.
Chicago and other major cities remain in the news, as they continue to struggle with high murder rates. In fact, the city of Chicago has witnessed a 50 percent increase in its murder rate in only a one year period, and this area is not alone. Thankfully, cities across America and noticing violent and property crime rates remain at historic lows. The new adminstration has noted the increase in murder rates, but needs to also consider that other crimes on are the decline, which is always a good thing.
