1. Craig Markham Explains the Canadian Law Enforcement System As a fifteen year veteran Law Enforcement Officer, Craig Markham has become somewhat of an expert in the field. Working with different forms of Law Enforcement, Constable Offices, and Corrections has exposed him to the many intricacies of the Canadian judicial system. Public sector police forces in Canada are associated with the three different levels of government, the federal, provincial, and the municipal.
of 2003 and “The Burden of Bad Ideas: How Modern Intellectuals Misshape Our Society” of 2000 contain ideas similar to those expressed in “The War on Cops.” The powerful stance Mac Donald takes on certain themes expressed throughout “The War on Cops” direct the reader’s understanding towards the flaws of America’s governmental systems, revealing the backstory and complexity of racism and criminal justice behind our “war on cops.” To begin, Mac Donald notes one of the many shortcomings of the Obama administration, of which she addresses frequently throughout the book. She criticizes the acknowledgements of police racism and the bias in the criminal justice system made by President Barack Obama on national television, stating “In doing so, he
When Pony surveys the gang before the rumble, we get some valuable insight into each of the surveyed boys. Their responses allow us to understand each character a little more. Their answers reflect who they are and what they think of the world, However, two members of the gang were not present at this inquiry; Dally and Johnny. Though they weren't there, it’s fairly easy to guess what they could have answered based on how they act and what they say.
“Frequent exposure to media reports of police abuse or corruption is a strong predictor of perceptions of misconduct and supports the belief that is common.” (France-Respers 1). But unfortunately, it also brings me disheartened feelings. Recently, I was on twitter and I stumbled across a video of a young white male who was roughly about twenty to twenty-five years of age who was being handled so aggressively by about six officers while he was NOT resisting.
Discretion is the power of officials to choose among multiple possible courses of action; whether or not to give someone a speeding ticket, or give them a warning. Discretion is vital to the police. It is impossible for the police to arrest ever individual who commits a crime; instead, the police rely on their ability to use discretion: handing out tickets, warnings, etc. Discretion is important, but there are situations in which the administration has to limit the officers use of discretion. East Valley’s police department will implement policies that will require officers to make an arrest in certain situations.
The main example throughout the documentary was the “rotten pocket” example that is used to describe a corruption in the prescient where more than one officer is corrupt, and are cooperating to fulfill this illegal act. In the documentary, Michaels partner described how everyone, even up to the captain was corrupt and in on their ring. This is a big problem within police departments since other officers will lie to protect their own, instead of doing what is in the best interest of the station, and the criminal justice system. Many programs like the early intervention systems and the mixed approach to police accountability The main goal of these programs being implemented, is to protect the agency from double-crossing officers and protect the
Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
Detroit: Is Now Known as the Better City Detroit is now known as the better city. Change is the act or instance of making or becoming different. Detroit: An American Autopsy,LeDuff talks about how many things in Detroit changed, some changed for better, but others changed for the worst. Plain and simply put, if the community can’t trust law enforcement, then when law enforcement does something that looks even remotely out of line, the community’s perspective of them will get worse. Another thing I learned, was that many people hate all law enforcement because they had one bad encounter with an officer. From an educated perspective it seems unfair and even laughable that this would be the case, but the proof was real. One bad encounter with law enforcement and that person can correlate it to every law enforcement officer they ever encounter again. The strongest answer I found to the negative association with police officers was media manipulation for ratings.
Statistics show that crime rates in the region of Toronto have fallen to the lowest as released by Statistics Canada. But looking at the numbers for the policing budget is astonishing. Although the crime rates have declined drastically the budgets for the Canadian police is still on the rise. The total budget allotted to just the police departments in Canada is $13.6 billion. As we observe the charts below we can clearly see that as the crime rates rose, the number of police officers also rose from the 1960’s till the 1980’s where we see a stagnant slope on the graph.
Although it is questionable, that policing in America has different time periods. There is an agreement of three major eras of policing in America. Those three era's are, The Political Era, Reform, and Community Policing. (Cheeseman et al. , Chapter 3)
Many police agencies today have established a code of ethics, or codes of conduct, and it easy to find parallels between Peel’s principles and present policies and
The media makes the severity of the situation much worse. In some instances, a situation is represented in way that conveys a case as deceptive. Police misconduct, in this situation, is preposterously distorted. For example, the scene one sees on television may be completely inaccurate. In the article Unpacking Public Attitudes to the Police: Contrasting Perceptions of Misconduct with Traditional Measures of Satisfaction, Miller states, “…research found that people's fear of crime was related to crime content in the newspapers they read…”( 6).
Corruption is a type of misconduct and offense in which the police break their contract and oath by abusing their power for personal gain or even for departmental gain. Examples of types of police corruption a. Bribery- police officer receives bribes so that they cannot write tickets for people who have gone against the law for example, from prostitutes and gambling, bribery does not only affect the united states but its world spread, examples of other countries with highest percentage of bribery are Pakistan and France. b. Assault on suspects- police officers use excessive force on suspects leading to injuries and at times suspects end up dying in their custody. Some police officers have been charged with murder of suspects in their custody.
Literature Review *Needs Serious Help The literature used for this subject is closely related to one another with key differences between each different articles approach.
