Isaac Newton Research Paper

708 Words3 Pages

Despite a rough start to his life and insecurities with his family, Isaac Newton put his focus on his studies in science rather than his life’s issues. Because of this passion to understand how things happened, he was able to establish himself as one of the most brilliant scientific minds in the field of physics. He has been described by some as “one of the greatest names in human thought” (Martinuddin, 2012). In addition to the contributions of the laws of gravity and laws of motion, he was able to provide evidence of the light spectrum (Hall, 1998). With Newton’s discoveries, he helped bring about the 17th century scientific revolution (Biography.com editors, n.d.). Isaac Newton was born January 4, 1662 in Woolsthrope, England. One of the major findings from Newton was his theory on the light spectrum. As he studied light, he formed a hypothesis and was able to give evidence that white light is a result of the combination of other colors of light. When this light is divided by a prism, the parts form a band of color known as a spectrum. How did this help science? In addition to his theory of light, Newton’s important finding was the concept of gravity. Gravity is defined as the attraction between objects in space that hold planets, moons, and comets in orbit as well as drags falling objects toward Earth. Going unpublished for over twenty years, his concept of gravity remained incomplete and lacked proof that gravity existed. How did this help science? When Newton was professor of mathematics at Trinity College, he presented a paper on his discoveries in optics and was severely condemned by another scientist named Robert Hook. Due to the criticism, Newton became competitive with Hook which inspired several written publications. In 1680, he printed his efforts in a three-volume book called, Mathematical Principles of Natural which allowed him to become an English celebrity (Williams, 2014). Furthermore, Newton founded the idea that motion had specific rules. These became known as the laws of motion. The first law of motion is known as “law of inertia”, which states: “An object in motion will
