At the outbreak of World War I, Lucy Paignton-Fox enlists in the Australian Army Nursing Service and leaves her family’s cattle station in the Northern Territory to join the war effort. During the Gallipoli campaign she serves in hospitals in Egypt, but when the Anzacs are posted to France she moves with them. A talented and spirited nurse, with dreams of one day becoming a doctor, Lucy finds more opportunities than she ever imagined: working alongside doctors and surgeons, sharing the soldiers’ dangers, helping them through their pain, and making lifelong friends. The novel “Ella Minnow Pea” written by Mark Dunn, describes the tragic story of Nollop Island. Mr. Nevin Nollop – the man for whom this Island named. At the center of Nollop Island is pedestal upon which his sculpture and words: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog"(2). He invented the sentence which obtaining all the letters of the alphabet. All its inhabitants live by the rules established by the five-man council.
At the start of the novel, Lutie Johnson is portrayed as a hard working women who is looking to turn her life around to improve her current situation. She buys this house on the street as a step in an upward movement for a place for her and her son Bub to live. From there she has a bright plan to find a job and earn enough money to eventually find a nicer and more permanent house. At this point she has the ambition and will, but unfortunately from here on out the racism and sexism gets to her head and we only see a downward trend. Throughout Luties experiences on the street we see her initial motivation begin to deteriorate; the incidents with Jones and Bub quickly build up and eventually force her to make poor decisions.
I think that the character in my book named Laia is a very considerate person, because she always worries that her actions may cause harm, and inconvenience to others, therefore she is very careful when making decisions. Laia has to rescue her brother from death at Kauf Prison. Darin is Laia’s last living family member so she has a lot of love and affection towards him. Darin saved Laia from rape, execution, and many more. Laia believes that Darin should be rescued from execution, because he was helping the Empire in some sort.
A Smart Hero There are many important figures that fought for civil rights, but one that stood out to me was Katherine Johnson. She was one of the first African American women to work at NASA and was very intelligent. Katherine had many values but there are 3 values that she had that were very important. Katherine Johnson displays courage, determination, and excellence when she started working at NASA when racism and gender was still a big problem.
Isabella is depressed during most of the book because of her abusive marriage. During the book Wuthering Heights their is an chapter that is a letter written by Isabella and how her time at Wuthering Heights is. “ Is Heathcliff a man? If so, is he mad?
Love is not always right especially in the case of this tragic tale. Heathcliff is a troubled man and the abuse he has already experienced inhibits his ability to love properly. This can be seen especially through his reaction and heartbreak to Catherine’s death: “Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living. You said I killed you--haunt me then. The murdered do haunt their murderers.
Heathcliff was tipped by his childhood and led down the path to become an abusive man who knows nothing about healthy relationships. He hangs his wife’s dogs and brags to her about it during an argument, he hit’s Nelly while she’s trying to stop him from beating Cathy, and he uses his son Linton as a tool for his own selfish gain, and abuses him while he’s on his deathbed. Yet the path too good or evil isn’t always as straight laced as one would believe.

The Outsider In Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff is an ultimate outsider who struggles to find his place in the judgmental town of Yorkshire, as his new family lead by Hindley, is unwelcoming and scornful upon his arrival. Once reaching Yorkshire, Heathcliff quickly falls in love with Catherine, a member of his new “family”; the love seems to be mutual, as their feelings for one another prove that they are close spiritually and emotionally. However, Catherine’s love for him is reprimanded by the corrupt society because he is viewed as a total outcast, possibly because of his race. But, because of Heathcliff’s social class and possible cultural background, he is continuously disrespected throughout the entire novel and his convoluted,
Firstly the obsessive love between Catherine and Heathcliff. Catherine claims that her love for Heathcliff “resembles the eternal rocks beneath –a source of little visible delight, but necessary” (73). She tells her housekeeper “Nelly, I am Heathcliff –he’s always, always in my
son Linton . Isabella expresses Heathcliff’s transformation in a letter to Nelly Dean “ I assure you, a tiger, or a venomous serpent could not rouse terror in me equal to that which he wakens ... I hate him - I am wretched - I have been a fool ” (W.H., p.125). Emily presents through the character of Isabella the tragedy of the innocent and naive girl who is oppressed by the gothic villain in gothic novels. 42 Heathcliff’s revenge transformed into obsession; it is even transcended to the next generation.
Heathcliff starts as an innocent, helpless orphan, but when he loses Catherine he changes, there is an evident development in his personality, he dies at the end alone, weak and almost mad . Emily does not give connotation that he deserves that end, on the contrary, we feel pity towards him in spite all of his devilish actions. He is a complex character and arouses a complex feeling in the readers. It is the same with Catherine ; though she is a pretty girl with a wild spirit , she has an arrogant heart and she wants to become an elegant young lady in her community. Moreover, after the time she spends at Thrushcross Grange, her vanity increases and the relationship between her and Heathcliff become complicated.
Heathcliff’s obsession with revenge indicates his need to rebel against the very system, that separated him from Catherine. This same system of values is what made him look for relationships that are only beneficial to his agenda and care for no one, not even his
Heathcliff displays himself to be the “...tyrant [that] grinds down his slaves and they don't turn against him; they crush those beneath them." (Brontë 106). Heathcliff’s idea of self-worth causes him to seek revenge and gain wealth through it. However, the “...revenge he subsequently takes seems out of all proportion to the wrong he has suffered.” (Cheetham 1).
