1 John 3:16-18 states, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth.” This scripture tells us that God calls us to love and be generous towards others. It also teaches us about Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice of dying on the cross and His unconditional love for us. To love unconditionally means to love without conditions or “limits.” Another term for unconditional love is “agape love.” The word “agape” is of Greek origin and describes the fatherly love of God for all humans. A famous Bible verse, John 3:16, shows us God’s unconditional love. The verse says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” When Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross, humanity was saved because God loved us so much. It was God’s unconditional love which saved us from the punishment of eternal death. Two great sources of unconditional love in my life include my parents and my dog, Mochi. No matter how many times I mess up, argue, or disobey my parents, I know they’ll always love me no matter what. They love both my sister and me unconditionally. Several studies have shown that pets, especially dogs show unconditional love towards their owners. Dogs don’t care who you are, what you look like, where you’re from, etc. They’ll love you unconditionally and provide you with lots of happiness and compassion.
