ENC1102 Paper 2 Theme Analysis- “Trifles” and “A Rose for Emily” “No one can live without relationship. You may withdraw into the mountains, become a monk, a sannyasi, wander off into the desert by yourself, but you are related. You cannot escape from that absolute fact. You cannot exist in isolation.” Philosopher, speaker and writer, Jiddu Krishnamurti once said these words to make a statement on one’s reason for isolation. When we demand to be isolated, it does not mean we are alone. Often, we as human beings are never truly alone since we are constantly surrounded by many other strangers or family members as well as by our own thoughts. For instance, Mrs. Minnie Foster used to be happy and cheerful but, that happiness turned to loneliness over the course of her relationship with John Wright. We as the readers know this based on a conversation with Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters downstairs. She said, " I think maybe that's why she kept so much to herself. She didn't even belong to the Ladies Aid. I suppose she felt she couldn't do her part, and then you don't enjoy things when you feel shabby. She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir. But that--oh, that was thirty years ago.” Moreover, in the story “A Rose for Emily, the first instance when the people of the town witness the unusual behavior of Emily is during the death of her father. Emily refuses to accept that her father his dead and therefore prevents the people from carrying her father’s body for burial. She told them that her father was not dead. In the face of crisis, she lost control and acts in an uncommon manner. She also shows complete disregard to the laws of her society. Years of isolation has turned Emily into a miserable and odd woman who eventually kills the man she loves so that she can have him
