The 19th century was a big turning point for US history. Throughout the United States problems arose and politics still seemed to be an issue. The years 1873 through 1898 were extraordinary. Many organizations were formed to protect workers, inventions were created to make everyday lives easier and the nation went through two great depressions, in a way all years in history are important but during the Gilded Age three specific years stood out. Those three years being 1873, the first panic of the nation, 1893, the second great depression where it was the greatest depression in the nation's history, and 1896 when the 28th president of the United states was elected. Although all these years are important 1893 was the most important due to the economic difficulties thus leading towards other important events such as the Pullmans strike and the creation of many political parties.

In 1896 an African American Homer A. Plessy refused to sit in the Jim Crow car leading to a supreme court case, affecting all colored people of the United States. In the Plessy vs. Ferguson case it was said that everyone within the United States are equal yet those who are colored are separate; “Equal but Separate.” This led to the long lasting segregation problems in the United States until Rosa Parks did the same as Plessy, refusing to give up her seat and initiated the end of segregation. Election year is always important, the election of 1896 with democrat William Jennings Bryan against republican William McKinley left the United States stunned when their new president only campaigning from his front porch. Unlike his competition McKinley was supported by Rockefeller and Carnegie allowing him to have more money to campaign.
