The Contemporary Age began in the mid 1940’s and still continues today. This age was different from the previous ages, but like all ages before it, it had its successes and problems. The Contemporary age has been characterized by wars and the threat of war. This left American civilians feeling anxious and scared. This fear in the life of the American civilian during the Contemporary Age was captured in a novel written by J. D. Salinger. Jerome David Salinger, prompted mainly by his desire to become wealthy, wrote a novel that would cause mass controversy and eventually lead American authors into a new style of writing. This man was Jerome David Salinger. J. D. Salinger was born in 1919, to Sol and Mariam Salinger. His father was a Rabbi. He had one sibling. In his adolescence, he was not a good student. After flunking out of the school that was near his home, his parents sent him to Valley Forge Military Academy. He graduated from the Academy and returned to his hometown. After trying a few different schools, he decided to attend Columbia University for night classes. At Columbia University, he met Professor Burnett. Burnett helped Salinger establish his writing career. Burnett educated and provided Salinger with an opportunity to write short stories for the magazine he edited. Eventually, his work was being published in several large magazines. Unfortunately just as Salinger’s literary career was beginning to take off, he was drafted to fight in World War II. He served from 1942 to 1944. During his service, he fought in the battle for the Normandy beaches and in the Battle of the Bulge. When he was not fighting for his country, he was writing the story of a disturbed young man named Holden Caulfield. When Salinger returned from the war, like many others, he was traumatized. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). During his stay at a hospital, he met a German woman named Sylvia Welter. It was about a young, misguided boy, who is dissatisfied with everything in the world because he can find nothing pure. It received both good and bad reviews. When it was first released, it was banned from many school districts around the country. Many reviews said that the book was promoting immoral views and actions. Unfortunately, today some people still believe that, as it is banned in four states and is not allowed to be taught to students. However, most people have seen its literary value.
