Hoot, by Carl Hiaasan, in Florida, a teenage boy named Roy Eberhardt gets bullied on his way to middle school riding the school bus. Roy just moved there from Montana, so he has been having trouble making friends, and the fact that he has been targeted by the school bully, Dana Matherson, who loves to hector new kids, does not help. On this day, Dana is smashing Roy’s head into the bus window, and seeing as Roy can’t move he is forced to stare out of the window. He notices a boy about the same age running incredibly quickly, without shoes alongside the bus. Roy becomes curious of the boy, and vows to figure out who he is.
The book, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the poem The Courtship of Miles Standish surprisingly, have many things in common. The characters that are mere opposites are similar in more ways than you think. In the following paragraphs, we will explore the similarities and differences of these two books and their characters. First, we will compare and contrast the strategies and courtships of Ichabod Crane and Miles Standish.
The only similarity seen between poems “A Barred Owl”, by Richard Wilbur, and “The History Teacher”, by Billy Collins, is the subject of adults allocating explanations to children for the purpose of maintaining their innocence. Both poets approach this subject in very distinct ways; although both Wilbur and Collins depend on diction to convey their message, Wilbur utilizes his rhyme scheme, creating an almost fanciful tone, whereas Collins more heavily relies on irony in order to manifest his satirical tone. Wilbur’s simple rhyme scheme adds to the whole piece seeming more innocent and childlike. For instance, Wilbur writes “We tell the awakened child that all she heard / Was an odd question from a forest bird”. His rhyme scheme makes the poem seem more like a bedtime story, or a children’s book, which perfectly explains the theme of the poem,
De ‘Crevecoeur uses an subjective positive tone to describe his view of America, and a negative tone to describe Europe, both of which convey his vision of the New World. Throughout this work, he describes both areas in ways that cannot be proven to be entirely factual, and thus are his views and opinions. This can be seen first in the passage; “If he travels through our rural districts he views not the hostile castle and haughty mansion, contrasted with the clay-built hut ad miserable cabin” (310). De ‘Crevecoeur did not live in these two extremes of society in Europe, and therefore doesn’t have personal evidence to back up his claims. In addition, he uses subjective adjectives like hostile, haughty, and miserable.
Figurative language is often used in “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” because it shows Granny’s hallucinations. The flowery language that often personifies inanimate objects illustrates the intensity and detail of Granny’s hallucinations. For example, “Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was a gauzy shadow…” (398). Using the words “melted” and “gauzy shadow” give the reader a comprehensive picture of what Granny saw. Also, the figurative language used outside of Granny’s hallucinations help the reader understand how events occur in the story.
Obviously, these are animals not to be played with, which is likely why the parent is going to considerable lengths to caution his child. With courage comes the subject of brutality. The speaker's child and the Jabberwock clash in Stanza Four, two stanzas after the speaker cautioned the kid about the Jabberwock. Here comes the beast at the boy, “Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came!”
Most well written and descriptive stories use many disparate tools to make it better. The author of the story The Veldt used figurative language, imagery, and diction to foreshadow the tragic ending of the story. In the end the children use the lions from Africa to slaughter their parents ,and you can kind of guess that the children are planning something evil because of the descriptions and figurative language in the story. The children give off a very negative aura throughout the whole story that leads you to believe that something cynical is occuring.
Hi Wearder, I enjoyed reading your post. I am from Mississippi and I never heard of the about Hibachi and BC Osaka restaurant. I will have to search that location one day when I have some time to myself and try “Slap Ya Momma’s BBQ”, that name have my attention. That figurative language, I have heard many times coming up as a child. I heard people say “this food is so good that it will make you slap ya momma”.
The effective use of figurative language in the novel helps readers picture an object setting, or character in their mind. As an example, the author states, “The leaves stick together like floppy pages in a decomposing book” (166). This simile paints a clear picture of the leaves in Melinda’s yard. The ability for a reader to clearly see what the author is depicting unequivocally shows that Speak is enjoyable and quality writing. In addition, the author effectively uses descriptive imagery in the novel.
In the poems “A Barred Owl” by Richard Wilbur and “The History Teacher” by Billy Collins, both poets portray how different explanations to children pan out. Both poems describe the speaker being dishonest to one or multiple students, however, one is more of a little white lie while the other is a lie on a much bigger scale. The first poem utilizes personification and humor to coax a child back to sleep by easing her fears. The second poem applies homonyms and hyperbole to maintain the innocence of a room full of students. Through the use of these different literary techniques, the poets are able to express how the adults provide an explanation for children.

Sometimes, it’s possible to read between the lines without knowing exactly what is being stated in those lines. Take Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s poem “Yuba City School,” for instance. In this poem, Neeraj, a young boy, and his mother have recently immigrated to California from Punjab, India. At his new school, Neeraj’s teacher repeatedly insults and shames him for not understanding English, and it takes its toll. Through the use of figurative language, Divakurani conveys that one does not need to understand what a person is saying word for word in order to comprehend and be affected by what that person’s true message is.
