To build a Fire is written by Jack London, It is a story that a man and a wolf-dog travel in the Yukon on an extremely cold morning .Although an old man has told him that it is dangerous to travel alone on this cold day, he does not believe that man and keeps moving. He plans to meet his friends by six o’clock at an old claim. At the beginning, he pays much attention to walking and thinks those old-timers were rather womanish, all man who was a man could travel alone. Jack London describes the man’s inside insensibly. Although the plot is as simple as one man’s attempt to build a fire to warm him up on a very cold day, the theme that the man’s pursuit for survival against nature in ‘Love of Life’ is very great. In this tale, the temperature is about seventy degrees below zero and there is no sun and not a cloud in the sky, in such an environment, the wolf-dog is unwilling to walk outside, but the man insists on travelling alone and does not hear the old-timers’ suggestion. He stubbornly keeps moving and plans to meet his friends by six o’clock. In his eyes, he is not afraid of this bad environment and he thinks that all man who is a man can travel alone. Comparing to the wolf-dog, the man’s spirit is very strong and great. Then, the man walks carefully and pays much attention to his pace. He knows it is dangerous to walk alone, but he thinks he can succeed in arriving at the direction. Later, he falls into the ice and the feet get wet, this does not make him give up and tries his best to build a fire to warm him up. It is a pity that he cannot build a fire and freezes to death. By the inside description, it is clear to show us the man’s spirit of fighting against the nature. In general, this story’s plot is simple, but the theme is great; the man is stubborn, but he is brave and his spirit of fighting against nature is worthy of studying. But during the article, we can find out that the author didn’t care that man so much, more precisely, he does not make any overt moral judgments about the man.
