Essay on Jackie Robinson and Carl Erskine
This book talks about two characters that were in the major leagues. The main character is a pitcher named Carl Erskine. The whole book is about Carl Erskine reflecting back to the time when Jackie Robinson was still alive, and what he learned from him.
Before Carl got drafted, he was given encouragement by Jackie Robinson, at the time Jackie was his hero, Carl still remembers the time Jackie talked to him about how he was going to be with the Dodgers soon.
When the Dodgers did draft him he learned that Jackie was big on segregation. He didn’t like the idea that hotels, schools, restaurants, and other places didn’t accept colored people. Carl understood Jackie's feelings about segregation. He want to help Jackie on his dream that the world would someday allow black people to go anywhere they want.
Carl and Jackie were the stars on the team they won the World Series in 1955. A few years later though, manager Walter wanted to trade Jackie because of his attitude in the games. After hearing that he wanted to be traded, Jackie didn’t want to be traded so he decided to retire.

He felt broken hearted to see a strong man that changed history walk around without seeing on his last days of life. Jackie died of a heart attack on October 24, 1972. Carl felt very different without Jackie, he couldn’t go to his house anymore to have a drink and laugh together at their past years while still playing baseball. Before Jackie died he talked to Carl about his son returning from the Vietnamese war, he was proud of the man that he became. One day his son died because of a car crash. Jackie told Carl that he should have been with his son more than being with other kids that wanted to see him at a baseball
