Jackie Robinson is commonly known as the first black man to be in the MLB. Some know his as the man who ended the violence between whites and blacks. He can also be known as one the best athletes to ever play. Jackie Robinson truly did some great things in his life time, and should be a well-respected man.
Jackie Robinson didn’t have the best life as a child. He was born on January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. Jackie had five siblings, Mack, Willa Mae, Edgar, and Frank. Jackie was the youngest of all of his siblings. Jackie was raised by a single mother and lived in poverty most of the time. The beginning of his career he was spit on, discouraged, and called racial names by the fans, opposing teams coaches and players, and sometimes even his own team. The most famous of these racial remarks yelled at him were by Ben Chapman, the Philadelphia Phillies manager who yelled at Jackie the whole game. Chapman would yell “Nigger” or “Nigger Boy” every time Jackie was up to bat trying to get him to do something back. Jackie managed to keep his cool throughout the game without lashing back on Chapman. After this event the Dodgers finally accepted Jackie into their team. From then on they defended him whenever someone would make a comment and treated him like one he was the same as everyone else. Once having a black man in the MLB other teams and sports followed. He finished his career with a batting average of .311 and an on base percentage of .409. He also had 1518 career hits and 137 of them were homeruns. These stats were all produced in a 10 year period. In 1949, Jackie won the MVP award for being the best in the league. In 1956, Jackie received the Spingarn Medal. This medal is given out every year to an outstanding African American. Jackie was honored into the hall of fame in 1962, and in 1972 his number, 42 was retired so that no one in the MLB could ever wear his number again. Time magazine chose Jackie as the most important person of the 20th century. Jackie died at just the age of 53 due to a heart disease and diabetes. Throughout all of college Jackie proved that he had great talent in all sports. Jackie was the first African American to play in the MLB and most of the time there he was putting up with racial slurs and gestures. Jackie went on to achieve many goals throughout his life. Jackie Robinson is still a well-known man in present
