The Case of Paul Mills and Dr. Nancy Morrison Dr. Nancy Morrison was arrested for first-degree murder in 1996 for administering a shot of potassium chloride to her terminally ill patient Paul Mills in hope to hasten his death. Prior to his death, Paul Mills had undergone multiple operations including one to remove a part of his esophageal due to cancer, after each operations, he was left weaker and more dependent on hospital care and machines to be kept alive. He was in serious pain, suffering from being in a state of constant suffering, so Paul Mills requested to be allowed to die. A DNR was issued and his family decided to take him off life support. Both himself and his family agreed to the cessation of life support, and there was clear evidence that he will not recover.

On October 31, 2015 at approximately 0050 hrs, I was dispatched to police headquarters for a report of simple assault. Upon arrival, I spoke to Brett Fink (victim/suspect) who stated in effect that on the above date and 0030 hrs, he was sitting in the driver side of his vehicle with window rolled down and he was having verbal argument with Brandt, which turned physical where Andrew Brandt (victim/suspect) punched his left year and side of his head. Numerous legal issues are present in the trials of Dr. Kevorkian. All the issues circulate around the question, is Dr. Kevorkian’s actions in assisting a person with suicide and sometimes personally ending the person’s life considered murder if they want to willfully die? This issue cannot be easily solved, that is why to this day it is still argued in legislation. It contains an objective legal aspect, but a subjective moral, therefore until one is personally in that tragic situation, they cannot really state what is the right or wrong thing to do. A large issue in this case was not only that Dr. Kevorkian was assisting people in committing suicide, which is illegal in the state of Michigan, but he was also using doctor issued medicine and practicing without a medicine license.

He was well known for being the first physician to advocate for Physician Assisted Suicide. He helped hundreds of patients with terminal diseases end their lives. To justify the testing of the latest death sentencing method, lethal injection, The Department of Corrections requested the execution of Andrew Grant DeYoung, a murderer from Georgia, requested that his execution be videotaped to test to see if the new anesthetic pentobarbital which was added to lethal injection was a suffering, inhumane way to die, (Jackson). The videotaping was a success, which gave thumbs up to showing the videotape to the general public. The video-taping of DeYoung was due to the face that the first executed convict Roy Blankenship had begun to feel the pain while using pentobarbital. The taping helped the government see what needed to be done to make lethal injection lass painful, (Jackson).

It is about mercy killing which can be supported on the basis that it puts an end to the suffering of terminally ill patient whose cure is certainly not possible. And it can be further backed by argument that a dead patient’s organs can give a new lease of life to many patients who can be cured.
