James Fenimore Cooper was an early American author who began his literary career on a dare from his wife. In 1820, his wife Delancey Cooper, bet Cooper that he could write books better than those she read. Cooper began his writing career at a time when he needed work to support his family. This began a prolific writing career.

It was a book about morals and manners influenced by Jane Austen, (Britannica). His second book in 1821, was a historical romance about the American Revolution titled “The Spy”, A tale of Neutral Ground. (Virginia and Britannica). He also wrote Leatherstocking Tales, five historical novels about the American frontier. Cooper wrote several other things before writing his most famous novel “Last of the Mohicans” in 1826.
