Hypothetical evidence was used to support this claim. Thompson appeals to pathos by stating, “Write about something and you’ll remember it better, in what’s known as the generation affect . . . if you force yourself to jot down what you know, you’re better able to retain the material” (57) This evidence is relevant to the claim that is being made by refuting his argument, supporting his counter argument.
By telling their stories, they do so in search of inner peace. “I can’t understand where I’m going if I don't know where I’ve been.” (Wagamese 2) This quote indicates why Saul tells his story, even though it was written on paper. He is in search of his identity and throughout the novel, this journey will be shown.
Saul invested his time in sharing circles, listening to others share their experiences, and writing down his memories on paper. According to Saul, “If we want to live at peace with ourselves, we need to tell our stories” (Wagamese, 3). This suggests that sharing stories is crucial for the healing of people who have experienced trauma. By writing his story, Saul was able to let go of some of the shame and guilt he carried, which helped him move toward healing. In addition, the treatment facility offered Saul a peaceful land to rediscover his indigenous roots and reclaim his cultural identity.
This quote emphasizes how important storytelling is to Saul’s recovery process. In saying that “we need to tell our stories” to receive peace, Wagamese highlights the connection between emotional release and narrative expression. Saul addresses his emotions and memories that have long been suppressed through storytelling, in addition to sharing the horrific details of his past. By doing this, he can overcome his trauma and find self-acceptance. Storytelling is an essential tool in Saul’s journey to regain control over his life.
“To live is to change, to acquire the words of a story” suggests that living through those experiences changes you and makes you grow. Since you “acquire the words of a story,” you can tell that story to teach other people. If you do not reflect on what happened or you try to tell yourself it did not happen, you will not grow. Storytelling is basically a way of accepting what happened. Orleanna is “owning, disowning, recanting, recharting a hateful course of events to make sense of her own complicity.”
Conversely, opponents of this idea will argue that memoirs are not an effective way to represent that truth, because it is subjective to the author and relies much on memory. However, this notion is false due to a couple of key points. First, a memoir is written from memory, so in a sense it may be inaccurate, but this does not take away from the message or truth conveyed throughout the piece. For example, Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night may have some inconsistencies but it succeeds in getting its message across, that the Nazi’s committed horrendous crimes against humanity. Specifically, on page 87, Elie Wiesel writes that the Red Army liberated the camp on January 20th, but in reality the Red Army freed the prisoners on the 27th of January.
(70). This tells us not only about the veterans, but it teaches us about how they lived. Knowing these stories is the first step to truly remembering them. We can not honor these people if we don’t remember them, if we don’t know what they went through. Memoirs like this help show people the truly terrible things that happened to the human race.
James Frey was American author, he had many accomplishments during his life. He came out with many books but one lie had changed his life forever. He went threw a lot of obstacles to get where he is today. Even thru the tough times he always managed to keep life going and break thru the conflicts in life and wrote amazing books.
Memoirs such as The Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian and All But My Life by Gerda Weissmann Klein are examples of well written, and historically significant sources of literature. They bring history to life by filling in the facts of the event with emotion and personal experience. While most people would agree that reading an interesting story is more fulfilling and interesting that reading facts from a historian’s text book, there are some draw backs when using only memoirs as a source for information. I will argue that a great majority of memoirists do well when describing their experience of the historical event of discussion. However, it can be an issue when using memoirs such as Gerda Weissmann Klein’s
Telling people about the story-truth stories makes them feel as if they were in the war with O’Brien, allowing for people to receive a new outlook as to what occurs during and after a war. Even if people did not know most of these stories are true to him and not factually true, O’Brien still felt obligated to write this chapter to explain why he created the
The sad thing about stories is that “once a story is told, it cannot be called back. Once told, it is loose in the world” (King10), that plane with no survivors cannot be taken back, the article in the news about the bus that flipped is read by thousands of people and cannot be taken back. The author of the “Truth About Stories” never says whether he thinks that not being able to take back stories is a good or bad thing, but rather he states that “you have to be careful with the stories you tell. And you have to watch out for the stories you are told” (King,10) because they will shape who you
Did you know that there are different ways that you can communicate things not just textually, but in visual terms? When the memoir is expressed in a textual way it does not hold an emotion the same way it does in a picture. According to rhetoricians Cheryl Glenn and Loretta Gray in the chapter Writing Arguments, people 's actions and attitudes do not depend on logical reasoning: “Human beings do not form their beliefs or act on the basis of facts or logic alone; if we did, we would all agree and would act accordingly. Scientific findings would stop us from indulging in unhealthy eating, drinking, or smoking. …
He writes his version of the story to be more factual, whereas others may be more appealing to the readers and learners. Additionally, the multiple stories available can be both an advantage and a
This shows us that we don’t have proof of the credibility of some of these memoirs. We could read a memoir, and be manipulated by the danger of a single story. Articles, newspapers, and books may be exaggerated and far from the truth. Many people will just read an piece of literature or hear of news and assume it’s true without second guessing it, especially if it is from the media. When referring to
Storytelling has been the epitome of human expression for thousands of years. Along with musicians and artists, talented storytellers use their work to share ideas with others, often in an effort to evoke emotion or to persuade people to think similarly. Every element in a story is carefully crafted by the author in order to communicate a desired message to his or her audience. In Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut incorporates irony into the story to express his belief that fighting wars is illogical.
