The Holocaust was a terrible tragedy that caused 75 million military, civilian, Roma, and Jewish deaths. Of that 75 million, about 6 million lives were taken from the Jewish population. These people were killed in concentration camps, crematoria, death camps, and some died of starvation or disease. It is important for us to remember and honor these stories and to not forget everything that happened to these people. Different pieces of literature, whether they are primary or secondary sources, can help us remember and honor the victims of the Holocaust in different ways. Memoirs from the Holocaust are like an autobiography, but it focuses on a specific time in a persons life. Memoirs help us honor the victims by not just telling us about the stories of survivors, but that of those who made an impact on the author’s life who may not have survived. Elie Wiesel was a man who survived the Holocaust and went on to write his memoir “Night”. At night he quotes old veterans who say, “No water, no blankets, less soup and bread. At night we slept almost naked and the temperature was thirty below.” (70). This tells us not only about the veterans, but it teaches us about how they lived. Knowing these stories is the first step to truly remembering them. We can not honor these people if we don’t remember them, if we don’t know what they went through.
