James Frey, Leonard, and Lilly are the main characters of this book. James is the narrator, in which he told the entirely book through his points of view. He explains his feelings, thoughts, and reactions upon his addiction. He was a privileged child that began drinking and smoking pot at age ten. Now, that he is older, he is addicted to drugs and alcohol, which led him into a rehab clinic. Leonard is the person that persuaded James to stay in the clinic after he tried to leave. He has the power to control certain events in the clinic and plays a vital role in recovery. Lilly is also an addict, who was sent to the clinic by her grandmother. She ends up in a relationship with James. As a young girl, her mother sold her into prostitution, trading her for heroin, which later caused Lilly to become a drug addict. …show more content…

Ted is a drug addict and a friend of Leonard's who ends up being James friend. Ed is an alcoholic and is part of James's mealtime group at the clinic. Roy is a patient at the clinic. Matty is a crack addict, who was the former featherweight champion of the world in
