In the introductions he could be talking about something that happened in the past or he could be talking about the present and then he will take you back in time to get you up to that point, as he does in his children’s books. “In Along Came a Spider he started out with the main bad guy (Gary Sonji) fantasying about a kidnapping that happened years before he was ever born. Gary Sonji was imaging that he was the one who pulled of the greatest kidnapping of that century. Then all of a sudden James ends that chapter and takes you into present day with detective Alex Cross at a crime scene with three murder victims. The crime scene was in what people today would call the slums or the hood. Patterson the ends that chapter and goes onto the beginning to the kidnapping of Maggie Rose and Michael Goldberg. After Gary has kidnapped the children Patterson then decides to leave you hanging and talk about a secret service agent who is rushing to get to the school because that is where the kids were taken from.
