Bethany Haehn Due Date: Friday 25th Journal 1 I am reading “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” by W. D. Wetherell. This story ia about a boy who has a crush on Sheila Mant, so he takes her on a date in a boat and catches the biggest bass he has ever caught. He now has to decide on Sheila or the bass. I will be questioning and connecting As I am reading this story, I am wondering if he is going to pick Sheila Mant or the bass. The narrator might pick the bass.
After reading the novel Twisted, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, I have become more aware of how different emotions and attitudes that people have can positively or negatively affect how they’re viewed by society. Furthermore, an individual’s attitudes and actions can also change their perspective of the world and the quality of their life. Early on in the book, we are introduced to the main character Tyler, who is an emotional, unpopular, and insecure seventeen year old senior who is hoping for things to change. Throughout the story, we follow his emotional rollercoaster filled with his thrilling highs and devastating lows. After researching astrology signs and their true meanings about specific traits, I have decided that Tyler fits within the Cancer symbol.
The usual symbolism in this short story usually shows hate through his relationship with the jacket. In the story he throws the jacket into an alley near his house just to pick it back up minutes later. This symbolism show that the jacket causes him so much pain but he's stuck with it because his mom wont buy him a new one. Another symbol that supports he hates
"Crossing the Swamp," a poem by Mary Oliver, confesses a struggle through "pathless, seamless, peerless mud" to a triumphant solitary victory in a "breathing palace of leaves. " Oliver's affair with the "black, slack earthsoup" is demonstrated as she faces her long coming combat against herself. Throughout this free verse poem, the wild spirit of the author is sensed in this flexible writing style. While Oliver's indecisiveness is obvious throughout the text, it is physically obvious in the shape of the poem itself.
RAWHIDE DOWN RAWHIDE DOWN was written by Del Quentin Wilber. This story is about when President Ronald Reagan was shot in a assassination attempt on March 30th, 1981. President Reagan survived because of the quick actions of Secret Service men and doctors. The main character is Ronald Reagan.
Chains, a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson follows a young enslaved girl named Isabel at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Isabel is sold to Elihu and Ann Lockton, along with her five year old sister Ruth, after her original owner dies. The girls are shipped to the house and Ann Lockton, who demands to be called Madam Lockton, is terrible to them. She beats the girls and constantly yells at them. After this, Madam Lockton sells Ruth, making Isabel mad.
The book “SHATTERED” is about Hillary’s presidency campaign and the authors (Allen & Parnes) take note of that she saw herself, from the earliest starting point, as almost unsurpassable, even as she still could not seem to authoritatively run. She thought, they compose, that she had a meet with fate, and that her triumphant was practically foreordained. This state of mind, suggest the authors, would torment Hillary appropriate to the end. This is the sense in which this book “SHATTERED” is an account of brain science - the brain research of the decision class, which is exactly what the inevitable champ of the general race railed against for quite a long time.
The article “When Cowboys Cry” was published by Sandra Steingraber in The Orion magazine around May/June 2011. Sandra is a breast cancer survivor, and won the first annual Altman Award for inspiring and educating the causes of cancer. She has also written an article about cancer that was later made into a documentary. Following those previous accomplishments, Sandra received the Hero Award by the Breast Cancer Fund in 2006.

In the story Night Drive, by Will. F. Jenkins, there are many pieces of evidence that help support my claim.
‘Be Music, Night’ by Kenneth Patchen is an intriguing piece of literary art. A picture is painted of human interaction with Earth immediately. The manner in which humans fall into her beauty and vastness is apparent in even the first lines of Patchen’s poem, but why is this important? “Be music, night, That her sleep may go Where angels have their pale tall choirs” This choir is brought on by our musical mother nature.
The Power Behind “Just Walk on By” In Brent Staples article “Just Walk on By”, Staples shares his thoughts on the way marginalized groups interact. He uses his own experiences as a young African American man to shed light on how people can have implied biases that affect the way they treat other people. Staples does this to demonstrate how society develops preconceived notions in the minds of individuals about marginalized groups, primarily African American men, which are often a flawed representation of the people within these groups. The rhetoric he uses is key to developing an understanding persona and an emotional appeal that exposes the implied biases of people without alienating or offending the audience, to whom-- among others-- he attributes these biases.
The message behind the drawing of Chris McCandless shedding his old “skin” is to show how Chris wants to break away from the norms of society and put his past behind him. He is transforming into the man he’s always anticipated to be and isn’t giving into the expectations the world has set up for him. Chris knows the dangers that conformity comes with and he doesn’t plan on being the next victim. The message behind the drawing of the little boy’s “light bulb” being crossed out is to show how the teacher has ignored his out of the ordinary idea and how it wasn’t accepted. When conformity comes into play and certain statements become neglected and are viewed as unfamiliar, the youth won’t be able to help shape the world even more.
It is a strange thing to think that a rich and greedy woman could have large similarities to a poor slave girl, taken away from her family at such a young age. Yet, this theory is not completely far-fetched. The story “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson opens up revealing Isabel’s character to the audience, and allows a first impression. She’s a curious and kind-hearted girl who has a younger sister, and her master had just previously died. She was promised freedom in her master’s will, but was sold at a tavern by her master’s nephew.
In this report we will be talking about the novel Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen. All throughout the novel, Paulsen uses creative literary techniques to emphasise the theme of man versus nature. The novel, Hatchet, is about a young boy, called Brian, who takes a plane over a forest going from America to Canada to visit his dad, when the pilot dies from a heart attack and Brian has to crash land the plane in a lake. Brian then has to learn how to live in the wild while waiting to be found by the rescue crews. In the paragraphs below we will be talking about the literary techniques Paulsen uses throughout the novel, like metaphors, similes, reptation and exaggeration, that help show that, Brian is dealing with dangerous animals of the wild,

In the process, Wallance claims that people live their life the way they think they should, because it has come to a point that everything they do becomes a routine.
