That incident opened Jane eyes to a world different to what she is used to in her life, which is the world of poverty. This incident resulted to Jane Addams trait of compassion, she recognized the poor and felt empathy for them. She told her father that she will live near them one day in a large house between the horrid little houses. •
Jane Addam’s book, Twenty Years at Hull House, describes the work her and her colleagues did in their Settlement house on the West Side of Chicago. Jane Addams was a pioneer of social work who focused much of her efforts in working with immigrant populations and those in need, along with working to make change at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. This paper will address the ways she went about creating change, the American values that guided her social work, along with ways that the principles and values of her work are still ones used today in social work. Jane Addams and Ellen Star opened Hull house on September 18, 1889. Her inspiration for Hull house was spawned by her visit to the London settlement house, Toynbee Hall.
From Alfred Noble’s last will and testament, “…the person who shall have done the most or the best for fraternity between nations, for the abolition of reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses…” Many people have been awarded the noble peace prize such as Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein, Barack Obama, and Martin Luther King Jr. They have done extraordinary things for mankind, but when one women receives the award for displaying similar actions, people begin to question if she really deserved it. Jane Addams was a women that did things to better the lives of people all around the world, like women and children. She was awarded the noble peace prize on December 10, 1931, after years and years of extensive work around the globe.
Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15th, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was raised in a large Quaker family, which helped her to be charitable and compassionate. Throughout Anthony’s life, her family was also extremely politically involved with current issues, including the the abolitionist movement, and the temperance movement. When she was six years old, her family moved to Battenville, New York, and she was sent away to a Quaker school near Philadelphia. Later in the 1830s, Anthony had to return home because her father’s business was failing, so she became a teacher to help pay the bills.
She changed the lives of those in need in all directions from the Hull House. She changed the world of which she lived in, but more importantly, she changed the world of those around her. Without the strongness, intelligent, and caringness in Jane’s personality,
Jane Addams once firmly stated, "Unless our conception of patriotism is progressive, it cannot hope to embody the real affection and the real interest of the nation. " Her mission was to keep the people 's interest in the eyes of the country and to help them progress as a society in the wake of the corrupted Gilded Age. With the American people in the grasps of big industries and immigrants looking for a better life struggled in a nation where the dollar sign was held over politicians and the middle class and poor people, they needed help. Jane Addams, a kind woman who established a settlement house for the poor nineteenth ward of Chicago, had an astounding influence upon American society through social reforms in urban cities and influence
All of these people have unequaled accomplishments that qualify them for the positions. Jane Addams was a tenacious women with abilities to sway people to conform and come to unity as a whole for a better purpose. She carried her ideals and actions with firm intentions only to greater others that needed help. She has the experience to help us prevail into an overall better world and she would not mind continuing to fight afterwards to keep it that way. “A man who dies rich dies disgraced” (“PBS”).
Upward Bound has taught me so many valuable lessons and how to manage my time wisely. It taught me that strength and perseverance can make a significant impact in life. I also learned that forgiveness and the ability to forgive is much more powerful than I ever realized. This novel sucked me into the story and its characters and took me on an emotional ride of highs and lows. Finally, it forced me to reevaluate my previous judgement of the homeless.
In many ways, this book was very important to me. The author John Green had a very good way on capturing the idea of “true love and overcoming obstacles in life.” Undoubtedly, the strongest and most influential people I know in my life would be my grandparents. They have both been through so much in life, and they are still able to hold our family together until this day. Both my grandparents have had colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many more diseases.
Gilman gave me a more in depth position on mental health, and reading her story, I have been able to think and reflect on the needs that are important to every living person. I remember how my mother would tell me to make sure I eat and rest well when I am away from home. I would follow her instructions but I would forget about my own mental health. I honestly did not see the importance of it until this year.
That I and I alone controlled my own destiny. All life is, is a report card, and I showed that I could change what that report card read. In realizing this I believed that I could actually achieve my dream of becoming a doctor. That I was fit to join the competitive world of medicine.
