Jane Austen was born in Steventon, United Kingdom on December 16, 1775, and died July 18, 1817, in Winchester, United Kingdom. She was one of seven children of Cassandra and George Austen, who was the Oxford-educated rector of Anglican parish. When her and her siblings were younger they were told to read out of their father's large library. Her and her oldest sister, Cassandra, followed in their father’s footsteps and they one day team-up on a published work. To get more of a formal education, Jane and Cassandra were sent to boarding schools. Their education consisted of the appropriate teachings of the time, foreign language, mostly French, music and dancing. Then, the had to return home due to financial issues. Her nights and weekends were often occupied with cotillions, resulting in her becoming an accomplished dancer. Other nights, she chose a novel and read to her family, sometimes ones she wrote herself. December of 1795, she became very close to a neighbor’s nephew, Tom Lefroy, who was a student in London to become a barrister. They spent a substantial amount of time together and it became palpable to both of the families the love the two of them shared. Sadly, his family saw that their engagement were impractical and for him to focus on school and pursue his career. Her, nor her family, had much to offer their relationship. His family decided to keep him as far from her as possible because they knew he would lose all of his inheritance if her were to marry her. December of 1802, right before her 27th birthday, she was surprised with a marriage proposal from an Oxford grad, Harris Bigg-Wither, while visiting his sisters. She realizes that their marriage may be good for her family's condition. But the next morning, she then changes her mind and takes away her acceptance.
