Jane Austen is one of the greatest and well known English author, who has written some classic novels in the 18th – 19th century. She was born in Hampshire, England in 1775 and passed away in 1817 at the age of 41. Before her death, Jane completed six novels which include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Her novels still remains popular and very well known to this day in the English literature as it portrays themes of wealth, women independence, the social society, and the difference between romance and realism. Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813 and was consider the most popular novel Jane Austen has written. The story evolves around the Bennet family, as they deal with issues of marriage, wealth, and morality. The Bennet family includes Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five unmarried daughters. The oldest daughter Jane is a kind young women who find herself falling in love with Charles Bingley. Mr Bingley, who also find himself falling for Jane, has just moved in the neighbourhood with his sister Caroline and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy. The second oldest Elizabeth, the protagonist, is an intelligent young women who had some misunderstanding with Mr. Darcy at first but then start finding herself falling for him. Mr. Darcy, Mr.Bingley’s wealthy friend and the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, finds himself falling and admiring Elizabeth for her strong character. Throughout the entire story, the men and women are being called by their last name instead of their first name, demonstrating a polite way of addressing someone with higher status and power. Mr. Bennet, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bingley, Mr. Wickham, and Mr. Collins all play an important role in the story and the Bennet girls’ life. Mr. Bennet, the father of Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Kitty and Mary, is the head and only man of the Bennet household. He seem to be closer and love Elizabeth more than any of his daughters. He seem weak and fail as a father toward his girls. However, he stay strong for his daughters and wife, and wanted to see all his daughters to be married off before he die. Fitzwilliam Darcy, also known as Mr. Darcy, comes from a wealthy family and is very intelligent and straightforward. Just like Elizabeth, he too tend to judge people quickly and harshly. He is proud of his high social status and the wealth he have, and he tend to look down on many people. However, due to Elizabeth’s rejection to his first proposal, opens up some kind of humanity in him. He realize his love for Elizabeth, despite her low status and connections, and is determine to prove himself that he truly love and is worthy of her.
