Part One: Jane Austen ever the Gentlewoman
Jane Austen is one of the best known female authors. Born in 1775 England, Austen was one of few female authors of her time. Her best-known works, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice have been in print since the 1800’s. Austen is known for the way she used her class in her writing, her two periods of writing, and her fame after death.
The role of class in Austen’s life was a major influence on her writing. Austen lived in the late 1700’s where women of all classes had very few jobs. Austen was born into the gentry class, where the most important thing for a woman to do was to marry rich and increase her status. These two periods separated by fifteen years are categorized into early and late. Her early period started in her teens. As a child, Austen loved reading and started writing at a young age. By age twelve, she had started writing stories and dramas. At the age of twenty, Austen had already started the first drafts of what would later become Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility (“Jane”, EXPLORING). Her novels centered around young women much like herself, destined by society to marry for money. Many of her characters overcame great odds, ending up marrying for love (“Austen”), as Austen wished to do in her own life. Her early novels also played with opposition in location, wealth, and personality (“Austen”). The novels also made fun of typical writing styles of the day, her first two books were even written in letter format (“Austen”). Austen stopped writing around 1800, bringing a close to her early period. Jane’s father died in 1805 and then next few years were rough. In 1809, Austen moved into a new home and started revising her old works as well as writing new novels (“Jane”, EXPLORING). At thirty-five years old, Austen saw her first book published, fifteen years after she started writing it. The success of Sense and Sensibility, along with Pride and Prejudice, led Austen to start writing new books at this time (“Jane”, EXPLORING).
