Jane the Virgin, a spoof of a Venezuelan telenovela, currently on its third season is a show focused on bringing light to the Latino culture’s beauty. Jane Villanueva, a twenty-eight-year-old Venezuelan, who lives with her mother, Xiomara, and grandmother, Alba, in Miami, Florida. Alba, a devout Catholic, and her husband became illegal immigrants in America immediately after they got married. She dreamed her daughter would be a perfect Catholic, but Xiomara became a mom at sixteen, and to protect the father’s identity, Xiomara hid his identity from her mother. The show does an incredible job of including four major ethnicities, draws little attention to their differences, and simply goes about the show acting as though nothing is out of the norm. This is a wonderful portrayal of having a multiethnic friend group and displaying how everyone’s differences are welcome and accepted. Next is the conversation between Lina and Angela when Angela asks Lina where she went to college and Lina explains that she never did, but works as a waitress and a stylist. This was an interesting conversation because it is one of the first times in the show a stereotype is pointed out. The conversation is left feeling a little awkward, but is brought back up minute thirty when Lina tells Jane Angela was rude to her, and Jane explains that they call her, “Weird Angela,” because of her social skills, but she meant no harm. Jane brings the two together and makes sure both of their feelings are not hurt. While it felt like a negative situation at first, it ends up being a positive resolution between two distinctive characters. Last but not least is Jane and Michael’s relationship. Overall, JTV never puts a spotlight on the fact that Jane and Michael are different ethnicities. They do an incredible job of simply letting the relationship be and leave it at that. They are a beautiful and celebrated couple on the show and all of Jane’s family loves Michael
