Marrying into wealth leaves Janie unhappy, and after her experience with Logan and Jody, Janie realizes that it is not about the
Logan’s statements before about how he was too good for her really made her think about what she wanted and she decided to leave. Janie’s decision could be seen as good if you believe that she should be able to make her own decisions and decide based off her own happiness, but not necessarily others’. You could also see it as a bad decision if you think that she should not have just left Logan for Joe because she was angry. In the beginning of their relationship,
Janie, in the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, is an example of a person on a quest. Even though they cannot come close to understanding what Janie has been through, all of the women in the town judge Janie for her looks, actions, and life choices. They believe that Janie thinks she is much better than all the rest of them. The women tell Phoebe, Janie’s best friend, “Don’t keer what it was, she could stop and say a few words with us” (Hurston 3). As Janie tells her life story to Phoebe, to satisfy the minds of the gossiping women, she seems to be reassuring herself too.
He isn’t a very good husband for her either, however unlike Logan he starts off as a great husband, speaking in rhymes and doing sweet things for her all the time, but after awhile all that fades away. And he begins to disregard her, and always make her do work in the business, similar to Logan with the farm. And abusing her at home, until at one point, he goes to the lengths of calling her names and talking bad about her in the store in front of everyone, which angers Janie to the point where she says things about him right back. Logan exclaims “Don’t stand dere rollin’ yo’ pop eyes at me wid yo’ rump hangin’ nearly to yo’ knees!” To which Janie responded “Ah’m uh woman every inch of me, and Ah know it.
Nanny was a big influence in trying to help Janie set herself up for a good life that Nanny never had. Yet Nanny really set Janie up for trouble even though that was not her goal at all. When Janie married Nanny's choice, Logan Kellicks for his money, it only leads Janie to a life that she didn't want. Feeling no affection from Logan she feels misplaced and is not happy with her marriage. Janie is in search for a better life and that's what she does all the way through Their Eyes Were Watching God.
When Janie sees that Logan does not give her the affection and care she’s always wanted she allows herself to be wooed by Joe Starks. Swoon by his fanciful promises, Janie elopes with Joe and goes to a new town named Eatonville. There she earns herself the position of mayor’s wife. She lives a high lifestyle with Joe, but again lacks that needed affection. Joe starts to stop caring about her and focuses on his grocery store, his ambition, and his pride.
She never feels in love with Logan like she thinks will happen after marriage, “Looked up the road towards way off. She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie’s first dream was dead”(25). As one dream ends, a new one begins for Janie as she looks to the horizon. Janie initially holds the thought of love because of marriage, with this not being the reality, she knows it is time to find a new dream.
