Lab 07: Roots of Jazz: Ragtime Jazz music is a unique (one of a kind) musical art form invented in America. Jazz began around 1900 in the African American areas of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Jazz music is a mixture of the music of Africa and Europe. Jazz borrowed complex rhythms, singing style and improvisation from African music. Jazz improvisation means that a performer changes the melody of a song and invents a new melody as the song is being played.
In the Early 1920s African Americans began to feel the need to express themselves and thus new art, poetry and music was created. During this, one new music type exploded in popularity throughout the 1920s and began its evolution into the music now known as Jazz. Jazz became extremely popular in the 1920s do to the mixing of cultures in the instruments and the African American stories told through the lyrics that defined it. The music type known as jazz can be said to have first popped up in New Orleans but that is not necessarily true as the musical sounds actuated with jazz have been said to have came up at other places at different times but New Orleans is where jazz first got really popular.
Jazz meant much more than just a type of music to blacks in the United States. Jazz gave African-Americans pride to be black, it gave them a strong identity of the culture that was stripped away from them, it gave them a reason to fight the injustice that they faced, and it allowed several
Jazz is most often thought to have been started in the 1920s as this explosive movement, but that is in fact not the case. Starting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century many African American musicians have started to explore their taste in improvising, and where better to do that than New Orleans (Anderson). Before the 1920s these jazz musicians have already been going around sharing the unique sound, but up until then, jazz had remained majorly in New Orleans. Jazz music featured many instruments like the saxophone, drums, pianos, trumpets, clarinets, violins, etc. Jazz helped influence dance, fashion, and culture in the 1920s.

Jazz was a massive way African Americans were able to share their culture with others in their community and with people around the world. A majority of the popular jazz artists were African Americans because jazz was seen as “black music”. In the beginning of the roaring twenties, jazz was seen as low-class music because most of the composers were African Americans, but as time went on, people of the middle to upper classes began to accept jazz, which helped with the racial gap a small amount. No one can say for sure were jazz originated, but it combines the traditions of black New Orleans with the creative limberness of the blues. The basis of Jazz is syncopation. Which is the stress of beats that are off of the rhythm. Jazz is a combination between Both African and European music.
Jazz is a notably diverse genre of music, which is why so many people have trouble truly identifying it as well as defining it. The two components that almost every sub-genre of jazz share are the inclusion of improvisation and the sense of a general swing. Much of what a good amount of people understand to be jazz is either “swing”, “smooth jazz”, or “elevator music.” However, there are many specific sub-genres of jazz that can be very different from one another. Two of these are “early jazz” and “swing.”
Jazz music is one of America’s oldest genres. Jazz can be traced back to the twentieth century. Jazz began with techniques such as call and response, later musicians formed styles such as ragtime, blues, big band, cool jazz, hard bop, jazz fusion, modal jazz, bebop, and many more. Jazz used to be very popular but overtime the popularity of jazz music decreased significantly but the genre and famous jazz musicians will always be remembered. Miles Davis was a musician, trumpeter, bandleader, as well as a composer.
Jazz is a style of music from America it is played by a strong but flexible understructure with solo and a single effect on basic tunes and chord patterns. Jazz was born in New Orleans about 100 years ago Black music came over to America with the African slaves. The African music was then combined with the music of the Europeans to produce new styles of music including blues and ragtime. The blacks then started to jazz up the marches in America which were very popular by adding rhythm, beats and melodies.
Nothing very like it had ever happened before in America. Jazz is a music of act of spontaneity and articulation of genuine emotions. At first Jazz was considered devil's music but now it something you listen to to calm you nerves. It was a revolutionary time where free spirits would go out to dance halls and venues dancing to the hottest jazz music in the country. Soon enough in the mid 1920’s jazz music started influencing marching bands and dance bands of the day. Which was the form of most concerts.
In the 1920s, jazz music played a big role for most individuals. It inspired people to be different and taught individual thought and expression. A type of jazz instrument is a clarinet, which was invented in 1690 by Cristoph Denner (“The Clarinet-History”).
Abundant creativity of humankind is exhibited by the Jazz categorization through its combination of many musical traditions. Jazz is a music genre that originated New Orleans, Louisiana among in African American populations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a practice of displaying perceptions, exchanging emotions, and commemorating momentous occasions such as birthdays or holidays. Jazz materialized as simplistic embodiment of music possessing three chords and excluded lyrics. The Early Jazz Era (1900-1930s), primarily referred to as "Dixieland", was distinguished by the implementation of collective improvisation.
