In the early years of New France men vastly outnumbered women in the colony. With a lack of women, many men returned to France, consequently hindering the growth of the Canadienne population. To combat this, Louis XIV sent hundreds of women to New France in hopes supply marriageable women for men. These women are now known as the filles du roi. In Imbalance, Les Filles du Roi, and the Choice of Spouse in New France Yves Landry, the author, exhibits how the marriages of the filles du roi diverged greatly not only from the French counterparts but also the common practice of marriage in the seventeenth century in New France as well.

Storytelling can be described as a powerful tool, with the ability to reach many different individuals and affect their perspectives through the messages they are conveying. Narratives in a similar sense can have perverse effects on human consciousness, leaving impacts of how we think, feel, imagine, remember and relate. Mitchell states that popular fiction is important to society as it contains many important messages that can be disguised as social transformation or ideological revisioning due to the large and diverse audience that it is able to reach (Mitchell, 2012). The focus will be to examine four different popular fiction narratives from this term and the important messages within them that aid or encourage some aspect of social transformation.
Henri Rousseau turned into a full-time craftsman at the age of forty-nine, subsequent to resigning from his post at the Paris traditions office - a vocation that provoked his well-known moniker, "Le Douanier Rousseau," "the toll gatherer." Although an admirer of specialists, for example, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Leon Gerome, the self-educated Rousseau turned into the original credulous craftsman. His awkward procedure and abnormal creations incited the disparagement of contemporary pundits, while gaining the appreciation and reverence of cutting edge craftsmen like Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky for uncovering "the new conceivable outcomes of straightforwardness." Rousseau's best-known works are rich wilderness scenes, motivated
Found in act II of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera: Le Nozze De Figaro, Voi che sapete is a melodious piece of music sung by the character Cherubino. Cherubino is a trouser role traditionally sung by a female mezzo-soprano. The piece is a clear example of Mozart’s masterful ability to create beautiful music that still serves as a thematic device within the context of the story. Both the construction of the melody and the accompaniment serve the story and the character fully. Set in the bedroom of the Countess Almaviva the Arietta is a song of realization from Count Almaviva’s young page Cherubino; he is coming to terms with the influx of urges created by his oncoming puberty.
Because Meursault shut himself away from any outside emotions and didn’t care what choice he took, it became the downfall of him. All of those choices, of him taking the easy way out, could have ended up taking a different route, but because Meursault is a stranger to himself and to his life, his inability own up to what he has done was his flaw. That one choice made an incredible difference in Meursault’s life and he did nothing to stop it, as if he weren’t really there, like he wasn’t in control of his actions or of his thoughts. In a way, Meursault’s character is very similar to that of Hamlet. Both of their fatal flaws is there overthinking about life and in Meursault’s case his emotionless approach on life.
At the age of twenty-three Louis XIV of France declared his determination to be what he referred to as ‘real king’ – to become the sole and absolute ruler of France. To achieve this he invested himself in establishing a meticulous routine, but never did the king view his duties as a toil as his belief was that it was the primary duty of a royal prince to always present himself as noble and composed. Willing in his search for glorification, Louis spent his lifetime creating a magnificent and grand spectacle at the court of Versailles. The self-proclaimed ‘Roi du Soleil’ believed wholly in the theory of absolute monarchy and consciously spent his years embodying the spirit of the sun, and employing countless displays of spectacle which frequently
Eliot symbolizes the isolation of Prufrock in the beginning to show the character that he is in search of love. In his poem he uses a personification to symbolize the love of J. Alfred Prufrock: The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes, The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes, Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening, Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains, Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys, Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap, And seeing that it was a soft October night, Curled once about the house and fell asleep. (Eliot 297) The personification is a description of a yellow cat.
People are mostly remembered for their failures, wrong decisions, and wrong words that come out of their mouths. They try to “understand” but in reality they put a baggage tag that says “ What an idiot” or “ Stupid Person” on us. Their judgment is not fairly based since they do not weigh in the positive and negative aspect of each person, even if they say they do. Friendly and warm-hearted people are getting prejudiced, and we just stay here to accept the judgment of other people as our own.
