Jean-Jacques Rousseau and John Locke are European Enlightenment thinkers that wanted to change society. They lived between the 17th and 18th century and used the sutlic method to understand the world. They believed in three principles; One, the only way to know something is to use reason. Two, you need to prove things through the scientistic method. Three, to believe in progress. Among other topics that they wrote about they wrote about the social construct. Their thoughts are not only our past, it still influences our lives and our school’s today. He was born in Switzerland on June 28, 1712, and died in France on July 2, 1778. Rousseau’s ideas of society were different than other Enlightenment thinker’s ideas. He believed in the general will; the general will is the expression of the community. He argued that Men are selfish and they do not know how to control their impulses. Although, by following the general will men would "nevertheless obey only himself..." The general will, will allow them to be free from their true selves. By giving up their powers the people become civil citizens. people had to follow the general will, "..that whoever refuses to obey the general will shall be constrained to do so by the whole body..." Based on Locke’s belief in a society if a rule that the administrators formed is not only for the good of the students. The student can appeal the problem to the head of the administrators. Another similarity is that all laws are equal for everyone. I think that it is good that the school is based more on Locke’s beliefs rather than Rousseau’s because if the student would have as much power as the administrators than the school rules won’t be what is best for the community, they will be what we think is best for the community. One thing that I would like to change in Heschel is that students would have a say in the laws, cause after all the student are the ones to follow it.
