According to Henry Luce, the creator of Time magazine, “Functional Curiosity grows as the number of educated peoples grows.” Macdonald argues that being “functionally curious” is not functional because it does not help the individual function.

In the article “Donald Trump: How the Media Created the President” by David Sillito, he claims that the media messed up because they did not “...communicate the truth with enough force...” (Sillito 1) and in a way helped Donald Trump become president. Then, he goes on to say, that another mistake the media made was giving him too much air time. Rather than focus on the important details of the election, the media began to target the drama in the election and obviously Trump is followed by drama. In general, the media tends to cover races that are competitive, and the more competitive the race, the more likely it will be covered. Also, when races have the potential to interest viewers in other ways, such as elections in which celebrities run for office, there is a greater chance of media coverage as well. Through the use of paid media, contrast and attack ads, and the internet in general, television and media affect the choice of candidates in presidential elections in multiple ways. In terms of paid media, as stated in “Am Gov 2015-2016,” candidates may utilize paid media in order to “emphasize their good character and their stand on important issues” (220).

In the last few months, the current situation of asylum seekers has caused an increment of racist remarks in the news. The migrant crisis is currently considered a hot topic in the press, what implies that those events are considered newsworthy (NewsBank, 2015; Van Dijk, 1991, p.3). Actually, the press has always been a significant tool to spread ideologies, being racism one of them (Van Dijk, 1991, p.10). Consequently, racism in the press is an interesting topic of research for many sociolinguists, as the linguistics’ professor Teun A. Van Dijk. In his book Racism and the Press, Van Dijk affirms that ethnics are usually negatively portrayed in the press (1991, ix).
