“For me, it’s a partnership between me and the employees. They’re not resources. They’re partners.” CEO Jeff Gunther couldn’t explain the relation between autonomy in the workforce any better. Gunther believes that the ROWE system is the key to a successful company. ROWE which stands for “results only work environment,” is the complete opposite of how companies are run today. Companies are mainly based on strictness; you have to be there at a certain hour, you have to act a certain way, do what they want you to do in a certain way. ROWE companies don’t have a set time, as long as you complete your assignments correctly and turn it in on time this satisfies the company. Gunther also allows his employees time to work on projects that aren’t assigned to them. This technique has also helped companies with their glitches and brought up problems within the company that weren’t really visible. When you allow your employees to work on their time, to work on things that aren’t assigned to them, and allow them be creative your company will be successful which Gunther shows in this chapter. Big companies like Google for instance run their company with ROWE techniques.
