Most Americans should know about Jeffrey Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the most famous serial killers in the United States. He is known for: picking up gay African American men, taking them to his house, killing them, doing sexual activities with their corpses, and eating them. This is just a few of the things he did. The things this man did were horrific. It may cause you to think about what made him like this and why he did the things he did. To start off, Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born on May 21st, 1960 (Jeffrey 2020). He is the child of Lionel Dahmer, father, and Joyce Dahmer, mother. His dad was a chemist, so Jeffrey did not grow up in poverty. After moving to Ohio, they moved three more times within the state. After moving around, Lionel, Jeffrey’s dad, noticed that Jeffrey had become a shy and conserved child. He became socially awkward. To help him open up his parents bought him a pet dog so he would have emotional support. His parents also believed that Jeffrey needed to feel more involved in order to feel more comfortable in this new environment, so they let him name his younger brother, David. As Jeffrey was slowly coming out of his shy stage, his mother got very ill and was hospitalized.
After Jeffreys’ mother was hospitalized he became even more fascinated with nature and animals and the anatomy of those animals. He began to collect roadkill to study the inside of a dead animal. Not long after this, he began puberty which made his fascination with roadkill turn into fascinations of killing young men. Later, these thoughts turned into actions. Meaning that all these thoughts that Jeffrey Dahmer was having was most likely determined by his childhood experiences. When Jeffrey was a little boy his dad used to take the bones of dead animals, those animals died under their house, and dispose of them in the backyard. This is where his fascination began. When Jeffrey got older, he thought about these memories and decided he wanted to start picking up roadkill so he could explore the anatomy. Jeffrey was consciously thinking about what was inside the dead animal, but his unconscious thoughts were processing how happy he was while examining roadkill. This is a prime example of how something that may happen during one’s childhood can affect conscious and unconscious
