Jem the Hero Imagine a world where everyone was racially prejudice against black men and women and everyone was against anything they did or did not do. To Kill A Mockingbird demonstrates what this world would be like. This book was written by the author, Harper Lee. The plot of the book is mainly about a racist jury trial against a black man who claims that he didn’t do anything. This book is really intense and deep with some severe racism tied into it. Throughout the book Jem, who is one of the main characters, has shown that he can be caring, demanding, and brave towards other people like Scout and Atticus. Jem being the older brother he has to show that he is caring towards Scout and others. When Miss Maudie’s house catches on fire Jem starts to comfort Scout and tells her that everything will be alright. Jem says to Scout, “Don’t worry, Scout, it ain’t time to worry yet” (Lee 79). Another reason to why Jem is caring is the time Aunt Alexandra told Scout that Walter Cunningham was trash and Scout was devastated. Jem comforts Scout by saying, “ goin out for football next year. When Jem, Scout, and Dill were on the Radley’s property and they were being shot at, Jem demanded Scout to head towards the fence. Scout says, “Jem’s breath came in sobs: Fence by the schoolyard! Hurry, Scout” (Lee 60)! Jem also shows he’s demanding when Scout was starting to eat candy from the tree. Scout explains to us that, “Jem growled well it was I said. It was sticking in that tree yonder, the one comin’ from school. Spit it out right now” (Lee 37)! The final reason Jem can be demanding is when he was going to go retrieve his pants back from the Radley’s house but Scout was causing a ruckus and telling him not to leave.
