Thank you for joining me today, Kathryn Bigelow, director of hugely successful films, such as The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and Point Break. Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman ever to win an Oscar for Best Director, which she received for The Hurt Locker. We are here to talk to this talented director about her latest film, “Batwoman The Movie” which is the first ever female superhero movie. Q: Kathryn, what was your motivation for directing such a film? A: Up till now, no film director, let alone a female one, has made a female superhero movie. I enjoy being a pioneer. Q: Were you worried about the conventional prejudices associated with making a female superhero film? A: Yes, and that is what made making the film so exciting and challenging. Why did chose her? A: Christina epitomises strong and successful young women. She is not afraid to be unconventional in her looks and in her music. She radiates a determination and confidence that many women aspire to. She is never boring and never predictable. Q: Was it important to you that Elsa Pataky, who plays Batwoman, performed all her own stunts? What problems did that present to you as a director and the production company? A: Insurance was a nightmare, but having the backing of a major organisation took some of the financial worry away. It was important to me that Elsa performed as many stunts as possible because it helped create a physical as well as emotional connection to the character. She was determined to successfully complete these challenges just as her character was determined to successfully defeat her enemies. It is evident that transforming the pages of a comic book into a film is far more complex than many would imagine.
