Jem’s Memory Box For my final project, I decided to do Jem’s memory box. I decorated it from pages of the book as I had Jem’s reading session with Mrs. Dubose in mind. I put a mockingbird on it to symbolize Jem’s transition from his childhood innocence, to his more mature perspective about the world. The picture of a football is there because Jem loves the sport. For my five items I chose: A toy gun, a cast, a flower, a soap doll, and his football magazine. Toy gun: I decided to put a toy gun in his memory box for two main reasons. One of them is the time Jem and Scout assumed that their dad was boring, but when Tim Johnson came storming up the street, Calpurnia called Atticus who came and shot the dog. While walking home, Bob Ewell attacks them, knocking Scout to the ground leaving Jem to fight with Bob. He tries to save Scout attempting to get her to run, then Bob hurts Jem, breaking his arm. Scout is about to be attacked when Boo comes in and saves the two by killing Bob. He takes Jem home to Atticus, Aunt Alexandra, and Calpurnia. Even though he doesn’t know what happened, he will probably soon learn and be thankful for Boo. A flower: The flower represents the Camellia flower that Mrs. Dubose gave him after she died. The flower reminds him of the time he wrecked her bushes because she angered him. He starts to read to her as punishment and starts staying longer every session. He realizes that she’s not bad as he thought, just before she dies. Jem later learns that Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict, who used their reading sessions as a way to keep her mind off the addiction. She died holding onto nothing or nobody and Atticus gives a big speech about what courage is, and how she’s the bravest person he ever knew. He later receives a box from Mrs. Dubose with a Camellia flower symbolizing that she forgave him and it reminds Jem she wasn’t as bad as she seemed and goes to get comfort from
