11) The title of my book is Crash. This is a good title because it captures the overall feeling of the story. The main character suffers through a traumatic vision that eventually is all she can think about. The vision ends up taking over her life, causing her to “crash” or shut down. She is unable to make the vision go away, which causes her to act out of the ordinary, so her friends and family begin to worry.
It’s an argument we’ve all heard before and there are more than a few books that have tackled the subject. But what’s different from even the last three years is just how widespread the media has become. Today’s teens spend an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes absorbing media in just one day, which includes the amount of time spent watching TV, listening to music, watching movies, reading magazines and using the internet. This is a generation that’s been raised watching reality TV – observing bodies transformed on Extreme Makeover; faces taken apart and pieced back together on I Want a Famous Face. They are, as Tina Fey puts it, bombarded by "a laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful.”
In the thrilling and suspenseful novel The Cellar by Natasha Preston, the main character Summer was followed in the streets of England at night by a stranger that later chloroformed her and took her to a basement in the middle of the English countryside. She latter was awoken by three strangers all smiling as if they were best friends. The strangers were dressed like dolls, each matching with long sweaters and matching pants, the only difference was the delicately embroidered flower on the sweaters. The three girls all looked as if they were zombies all hypnotized by something, but showing only one emotion fear. And that is when Summer realizes she has been kidnapped.
Katherena Vermette’s novel The Break, is centered around a sexual assault. Through the perspective of eight narrators the story unfolds over the day leading up to the attack, memories triggered by the assault, and the recovery of all those involved. The novel’s two strongest themes are a juxtaposition of gender disparity and the strength and resilience of the women and girls involved. Gendered performance is common throughout the book, for both men and women, although the focus is on the female characters.
In this essay I will touch on what intrigues me about Alison Bechdel’s creative and powerful art in Fun Home. Specifically this essay will look at a couple of pages that include her most interesting panels in the whole book. I compare the panels to others and discuss the feelings I have toward her choice of drawings and dialogue. By looking closely at and analyzing her artwork, I will show how Bechdel arouses curiosity with only two pages. First I will discuss a few panels on pages 220 and 221 that include Alison talking to her father after she has returned from college.

In Avi’s True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, the Seahawk could have been very dangerous for Charlotte to go on by herself. For example, the ship could have been taken over by pirates or Charlotte could have gotten sick during the voyage.
The Underneath is a tale of loss, love, and betrayal. The Underneath follows the story of a cat who had been loved and sheltered for most all of her life by her owners. One day, she was left on the side of the road by the owners whom she had loved. The cat was expecting kittens in weeks time, so she knew she had to find somewhere to live, as well as somewhere to raise her unborn children. With nowhere else to go, she wandered through the woods looking for shelter.
Picking Cotton I read the book Picking Cotton over the summer and I thought that this book was interesting. I thought it was interesting because of how everything played out in the in because in the situation that Ronald Cotton was in I would have not been as forgiven as he was. I learned a lot from this book. One of the first thing I learned from this book is how once people this they have found the answer, even if it’s wrong, they choose it because the jump to conclusions.
“2.2 million people in the United States depend on a wheelchair for day-to-day tasks and mobility. 6.5 million people use a cane, a walker, or crutches to assist with their mobility”. Every single day, people varying in ages, struggle to live their lives due to conditions out of their control. Whether it be life threatening or not, it can have effects that are both socially and emotionally harming. Although some of them may change appearances on the outside, other people cannot forget that all people, not matter the disability, have brains and personalities of their own that may not be seen to the human eye.
Journal 5 The author, Sabrina Erdely, begins the article by expressing all of the ways college students spend their time on weekends, as well as most weeknights. All of the activities she listed had one thing in common: alcohol. Erdely then goes into detail describing just how important getting drunk on the weekends is to students. “The challenge to drink to the very limits of one’s endurance has become a celebrated staple of college life. In one of the most extreme reports on college drinking thus far, a 1997 Harvard School of Public Health study found that 43 percent of college students admitted to binge drinking in the proceeding two weeks.
I picked "In Cuba, I was a German Shepherd" tale. It has a very catchy name. Maximo, a Cuban immigrant, retraced to his friends in Miami his funny jokes while they were playing double-nine dominos. The 11 short stories are focusing on family relationships and immigrants' nostalgia for a past and the hard days that Maximo and his family passed by starting from their arrival in America. For my imitation essay I chose "Once More to the Lake" by E.B. White. It seemed almost surreal when I first read the essay, in fact it wasn’t until the second or perhaps third time that I really believed it. I also grew up with a cabin by the lake in Maine only about 181.2 miles north of where E.B. White spent his summers and it belonged to my Aunt Jeannette. To say this story seems like something that I experienced is weird, because too much similarity exists between Mr. whites story and mine.
Some might say that the use of alcohol is common place and nothing more than a stepping stone in the ritual of being a college student. The problem is the consequences of binge drinking and excessive drinking should not be accepted as “ritual” or common place. Some consequences are extremely problematic and not only impact the individual but have lasting consequences for the college environment in a global sense.
I am an avid notebook keeper and journal writer, so this essay seemed interesting. Lastly, I chose On Dumpster Diving because I was interested in knowing what they were dumpster diving for. I have gotten old dressers and other odds and ends from dumpsters for various DIY projects,
