Evaluative authors value their credibility. An evaluation writers’ main goal is that readers accept their judgements. This type of writing is typically used to provide various audiences with a broad description of the quality of a person, place, or item. While this information must be useful it should not appear to be opinionated. Assessments should contain correct information, unbiased conclusions, and detailed evidence. The evaluation, Know it All: Can Wikipedia Conquer Expertise written by Stacy Schiff is an excellent example of a proper paper. The short paper, Children Need to Play written by Jessica Statsky, and evaluated by Christine Romano is well written but, lacks potential. Romano writes that while Statsky briefly talks about the opposing readers’ point of view. There will always be two type of readers, the ones who agree and those who disagree. Statsky’s paper will easily influence fans of contact sports however, fans of sports with little or no interaction would not be convinced. There is nothing to support the idea that sports without contact can damage or harm children as well. Statsky’s major mistake was not including the possible outcomes of a wide range of readers. Schiff discusses this momentarily, the positive parts of Wikipedia lead directly into the main topic of the paper. The main topic is that since every entry in Wikipedia can be edited, the information will not always be correct. Schiff claims, “For all its protocol, Wikipedia’s bureaucracy doesn’t necessarily favor truth” (Schiff 331). Schiff easily proves this theory to be true, she provides multiple quotes from William Connolley that tie directly into her original thought.
William Connolley is a climate modeler at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge. This man is relevant to Schiff’s paper, he was a victim of what is considered the “edit war”. He shared a short essay on global warming and another person was constantly changing it. Schiff quotes Connolley and several others that have serious objections to the website. Each one more convincing than the last that Wikipedia is a terrible site. Schiff was able to get her point across and was also able to appeal to those who enjoy and recommend using the Wikipedia
