John F. Kennedy is considered to be one of the best speakers of all time. This shows in his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, that he gave in West Berlin, Germany. In August of 1961, East Germany built the Berlin Wall. On the east side of the wall was communist Germany, and on the west side of the wall was free Germany. On June 26, 1963 in West Berlin, John F. Kennedy gave his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. JFK uses ethos to gain trust from his audience. JFK, also uses a friendly tone to gain support from his audience.. While, JFK, gives this speech, he moves his fist up and down in a powerful manner while standing with a confident and comfortable posture. In this speech, JFK lets West Berlin know that the whole free world supports west Berlin and everyone in the free world is a citizen of West Berlin. This was important because Berlin was going through rough times. The Berlin wall surrounds West Berlin on three sides. Many families were separated and there was no crossing this wall for most people. Starting when World War II ended, the United States had a strong relationship with Berlin. JFK makes this relationship stronger and it continued on with the following Presidents, as they too supported Berlin. The strong relationship, JFK, set in stone with West Berlin for future Presidents was most significant when ,Ronald Reagan, gave his speech “Tear down This Wall” which ultimately helps do just that.
