One word can change everything!!! “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, is a story about how two characters change feelings towards each other. A man conflict in the story is between Jing-Mei and her mother, she is over playing the piano and her mother doesnt let her stop. After a careful analysis of the story, the reader understands how Jing-mei’s feelings toward her mother changed, why her feelings changed, and how those changed feelings affected the entire story. Throughout the narrative both characters has different perspectives to what others prodigy are and how they are going to accomplish their goals as individuals. This quote has a huge impact for Jing-Mei's mother because she is getting confused and frustrated about Jing choosing what kind of prodigy she wants to be. Jing Mei states “I cried “ I’m not a genius! I can't play the piano. And even if I could I wouldn't go on tv if you paid me a million dollars”(Tan 225). It's why she didn't become a prodigy or how did not succeed in life. Jing Mei remained hopelessly and gave up everything knowing she would have strived to do better. “For unlike my mother, I did not believe i could be anything I wanted to be. I could only be me”(Tan 232). She knows now she could've done it, she could've been whatever she wanted to do with her life. Her mother always wanted her to be something in life but Jing Mei was so selfish. “ You want me to be something I’m not!”(Tan 231). Jing Mei didn't not want to be what her mother wanted her to be and that wasn't okay for her mother. Her mother never gave up on her. Kids need to realize what their parents do is not always a bad thing. Parents have a goal for each of their kids and that is to be successful. That's all Jing Mei mother want her to be.
